I too am/was a wannabe writer.
I have written 7 novels,5 in a genre which I had never read until I decided to try to write. One farce and a children's book.
The children's book came back from a publisher with very positive feedback.
Oneday I WILL get around to re writing it,although I have thrown the original manuscript away, along with all the rest.
You have to be thick skinned and determined. Getting published requires a fab plot, suberbly written and immaculatly presented.Editors get 100s of manuscripts every day. If they DO get looked at they need to be outstanding within the 1st sentence of the synopsis.
When I was writing it seemed that a synopsis and 2/3 chapters was the thing to send.
I know all the above sounds really negative. But you love writing and I know where you are coming from. Its a brilliant way to spend your time.So keep it up. Be prepared to bin stuff. Rewrite and rewrite. Every author started as an unknown. .....There must be some hope!
With regards to copyright(I am also a musician/music arranger so have copyright to protect) I package my CD/hard copy. Post it to myself 1st class, then it goes in the loft. The postmark on the unopened package gives me proof of ownership. Hope this helps.
And yes! change your heroine's name.
Its my kind of book but again, the name is a bit off putting.
My mother just had her book published and she had to hire a proof reader before the publishers would look at it.
