What do you have in yours? I've finally gotten round to getting my own rather than borrowing my friends stuff and as Ethel has decided hurting herself is fun :| So, I was wondering what people on here have in theirs so I have a good idea of what is necessary as I know that without some guidance I will just buy abosutley everything :o

I have thermometer, intrasite gel (although it's called something else), vetwrap, cotton wool, melolin, Sudocrem, Animalintex, syringe for squirting stuff with, Hibiscrub. If I didn't have them at home I'd also have a bowl or tub that could be kept just for clean wound-washing water. Think that's all....

Depends upon what you're doing, I made up a travelling first aid kit for the lorry with an ex gf who evented on a regular basis at high level, with ice/cooler packs to reduce swelling for any knocks or strains, if in doubt cool it!! Wound dressings and surgical arterial clamps in the event of an accident travelling, in order to be able to control bleeding, with plenty of cotton wool, gamgee and horse bandages/vetwrap.

When I hunt I carry a military wound dressing in one of the pockets of my hunt coat the theory being I can use it on either me or the horse!

Fortunately we never needed the major items, but the gf had a good knowledge of their anatomy and physiology and could employ them correctly. I know she'd previously managed to control the bleeding of a serious cut by direct pressure on the wound. Personally I'd rather have the kit and not need it, then need it and not have it... At least it gives you the chance to keep the injured horse alive until a vet can get there to deal with it.

I'm fortunate in that I have access to trauma packs through my work, but a lot of medical kit is available now on the internet, I'm not advocating that you try to treat a wound yourself instead of a vet, merely stabilise the situation until you can get proper treatment.
