Horsey gift for a man....any ideas?

I'm looking for some inspiration, so any ideas welcome :)

It's my dads birthday next week and I don't have a clue what to get him. I was trying to think of something horsey to get him, but i'm struggling with inspiration. Has anyone recieved a horsey gift that they loved? Or anything that they would love to get?

A bit of background on him - He goes riding twice a week at the local riding school and loves it. He has been riding for 6 or 7 years now and goes on a riding holiday every year with his wife. He is keen to come visit and have a ride on my new mare and when I asked him what he wanted for his birthday he said to come and help me at our next show and see me in the ring.

How lovely that he wants to be involved with your horse!

What budget are we talking? You could buy him some kit, boots, jodhs, chaps, hat silk, gloves, stick etc. You could buy him a lesson somewhere different or a hack/treck in a nice part of the country. You could buy tickets to go to one of the big horsey events.
 
He is great, I am very lucky! So supportive and always wanting to help out with things so I like to get him good gifts to show my appreciation. Just running out of ideas :rolleyes:

Budget up to £200, have done the jodhs, gloves and long boots at Christmas, he got new chaps a couple of years ago.

Lesson idea is great, or maybe a cross country training day, I wonder if you can buy one of these?? And if he would be allowed to 'hire' one of the school horses?? :confused: it's not something he has done before but when we go out for a hack at his riding school he always holds back from the group so he can go for a wee canter and pop over the logs! Worried I might offend his instructor (also my instructor from when I was little and when she visits my yard)

Not really into anything specific with riding, just likes being on board and loves that he gets the 'difficult' horses that the others won't ride. Instructor is a dressage trainer/judge so it's mainly schooling they do with long hacks, so never done any hunting etc. Has taken part in a small jumping comp at the school which he loved.

Wish I had more imagination!

A good quality silver frame with a picture of him riding?

A jacket.

Nice quality gloves.

Waterproof gloves.

Waterproof chaps (very apt for now!).

Posh schooling whip.

Most of the above won't cost £200, but you could a few things.
 
Ooo yeah! Waterproof gear! Very apt!!

A random query, does anyone know where I could get a BS rated cowboy style riding hat? He mentioned this a couple of years ago when he got back from his riding holiday in Italy, good for keeping the sun off your neck and face was his reason.... I think pretending he is a cowboy is more likely!!
 
Do have any photos of him on a horse that are special to him? You could then have it put onto a mug or mouse mat etc. lots of places online that do it.

Or tickets to Horse of the Year show ( or Olympia, Spanish Riding School etc). Nice winter riding jacket?

If he is keen to help you with showing could you get him a showing jacket so he could take your horse into an in hand class or something.

I like the horse of the year show idea too so you can go together.

If he fancies hunting what about paying for a hireling for a day? That would be a really fab gift.

For the XC training, I think the easiest way would be to book for a lesson at an equestrian centre that has a decent XC course and tell them that is what you want. No need to arrange to take a horse, just use one of their schoolmasters.

You can get broad brimmed covers for a skull cap, I don't know if you could get a cowboy hat that provides protection.
 
Is there a novice equitation class that he could do on your horse at the next show? That would be nice if he is happy about it.

Am also liking the hireling for a days hunting with you - if he is good enough - you don't want to put him in hospital!

The antique boot jack is nice too.
 
Very non horsey OH has just got me tickets to see the Spanish Riding school in action in November in the NEC. . It's a while off but I'm happy with it. :D
 
Thanks for all the ideas, much appreciated. Love the hireling for a days hunting idea, that would be fab! And a great excuse for me to do it too!!

Does anyone know of anywhere that would do this in Scotland? We are north east but could make a weekend of it if it was further away!
 
I got my OH a 3 hour driving course, he loved it, the smile said it all and of course we had to stay over for a few days to cover the 3 hours, horse was spot on and the instuctor knew his stuff, we have a ride n drive horse, now looking for a four wheel cart
