I have had my boy for 3 months now & out on hacks starts shaking his head about half way through. Had his teeth done & will carry on walking when I drop the reins but he still shakes - I get covered in mouth foam!! Any advice?

Given you seem to have problems mounting this horse as well as it headshaking the obvious question is - did you have it vetted when you bought it and has a vet or a dentist been called in to look it over since?

I think the horse is trying to tell you something.

Hiya

You need to first work out if it's mechanical or Medical.

Have you checked to make sure his bridle is ok?

My horse developed a bit of minor headshaking early on in the year when we were hacking out generally near water or areas where flies were prevalent. At this time of year it is unlikely to be flies but could be the wind, bright sunlight? some horses can't cope with wind up their noses or if he is sweaty, some don't like the feeling of any drippy moisture around the nose if theya re sensitive to irritation. Does he snort alot (particularly when he is working?)

Someone recommended to me to apply a fine layer of vaseline around the inside of the nose. Never tried it myself but our YO always rides with a nose net and her horse is fine now.

ETA Also he may not like the sensation of foam around his lips/mouth. Whe he starts headshaking, wipe his mouth clean and see if it stops the headshaking.
