Horsey items that just don't wear out...

I was contemplating this when I took my stirrup leathers to be re stitched this morning, they must be 10 years old and just now needing the stitching replaced. They are the only ones i've ever used.

Also have a poly pad that I bought at hoys 7 years ago it has been worn by every horse i've had, and is washed every week or more... looks brand new!

I also have my grandads fork for mucking out, according to my gran it was his fathers making it most likely nearly 100 years old!! Works a treat and very trusty.

In comparison of the set of hkm brushing boots which have lasted 1 cool hand wash before the lining disintegrated

I'm sure people who have been around horses alot longer than me will have many more hard wearing bits and bobs!

A refreshing change to this throw away society we live in

Not quite so long, but I have jods that have lasted about 5 years now being worn every day, washed, and dried out in the african sun..only now is some of the elastic starting to go! cost me about £8 brand new so they were a massive bargain!

I admit most of the stuff I bought with my first horse is still around. Boots, numnahs, bridles etc all still going strong despite daily use

Can't say the same for my county saddle though! Had to have girth straps replaced asap. Oddly, so did YM who has exactly the same saddle

Horseware Original T/O rug - 17 years & 4 horses later - still going strong. English leather bridle (Saracen?) 30 years old & been on 5 different horses. Stirrup leathers similar age. My piece of resistance? A leather lunge cavesson - probably 50 years old!

I still have (in my garden) feed buckets from the late 1970's and two or 3 of the brushes in M's grooming kit are from the early 80's - one's a wooden/bristle dandy brush and there's also a large body brush: they're fine!

I have Dublin chaps that are 12 years old. They are a little worn but still so incredibly comfortable. I bought some new ones a little while a go, but still choose to wear the old ones!!

I tend to find anything over/made over ten years old will last forever, anything made in the last few years will last a year if you're lucky!

i have a pair of johds from when i was about 15 i think - all i know if theyre a 26 waist and ouch they pich slightly now but i do loves em

one brand that arent what they used to be are hunter wellies!!! i used to have a pair years ago that lasted for years i sadly had to give them up when my feet grew

I have a lunging roller which is about 20 years old. It came with my first horse who I just had on loan many years ago. Anyway, the roller is still used twice a week and is in excellent condition.

I have loads of stuff I got for my 14.2 (had her 21yrs) sabre bridle, jefferies saddle, ancient lister clippers, stirrup leathers, leather headcollar etc. And a lunge cavesson I bought 20yrs ago for £1 from a lady on our yard who'd had it 20yrs. It's got plenty of scratches but is still lovely. Also plenty of ancient rugs, boots, grooming kit etc. Sold loads of her competing stuff 5yrs ago, which was all mainly 10yrs old for decent money too. Still have her westropp clacky over reach boots too.

I inherited a lot of stuff which is by far the best that I own and still going strong - my two double bridles are at least 50 years old and are absolutely beautiful. I am getting the buckles changed this year but the leather is perfect. I've also got wool travel/show rugs from the same era which are perfect - unlike the new one which has stretched and faded after a couple of wears. It seems to be the quality [lack of] in the materials used nowadays that means things last no time at all

I've always found Woof Wear brushing boots to be very hardy, I'm using a set on my new lad that I bought for an old pony at least 5 years ago!

They fit well and are still going strong, even though they've been through heavy use (and heavy weather for that matter!).

My knee boots are 20 years old and have been used on three horses everytime they were ridden. I've had one strap replaced after horse #1 snapped it and they are due to got to Calcutts for an overhaul soon but they are still perfectly functional.

Generally speaking I prefer older tack and have a 25 year old plus saddle which is currently in the workshops being totally rebuilt underneath - the tree is such a good shape it's worth it.

My horseware half neck turn out rug is 12 years old! still in excellent condition and will be used this winter!

I have a coleman croft quilted rug which is over 20 years old (and gets used every winter), and a pair of spurs which belonged to my uncle (who died 25 years ago) which get used pretty much every day. I also have a pair of brown pikeur breeches which get used a couple of days almost every week and are about 5 years old, but apparently almost indestructible.

Mountain horse riding boots

I have a short pair and long pair, both bought second hand about 7 years ago. Short ones are showing a bit of wear but long ones as good as new

I have a wonderful Bates saddle that was one of their prototypes and is at least 25 years old: fits everything and looks nearly new.

I have a pair of Loveson jods that I won in a trolley dash round Robbies when I was 11, that was 20 years ago! They are still going strong!

I was only talking about this with a friend the other day.

I have a pair of riding boots that are at least 20 years old , yet my dublin ones haven't even lasted 6 months (lost the receipt!)
Horseware rugs that have lasted well over 6 years, old woolen rug that someone gave to me, probably about 15 years old.

And the best thing is a black plastic bucket - just a simple cheap bucket that cost about 50p at the time - that has the name of a pony on it which we had getting on for 20 years ago. It's not cracked, the handle's still there and it's still used daily.

I have 2 nuumed numnahs, the ones that are half wool which must be 7-8 years old. Faded a bit but the wool still comes up like new after a wash and a brush

I have a saddle that came, 2nd hand, with my pony Mandy in 1967. It must be over 60 years old and has been used on various ponies over the years. Also, Prince's bridle which was new at Christmas 1967. It has Mandy's red and white plastic covered browband on it, which also is over 60 years old. I'll never part with them!

I still have my full leather chaps that I bought with my first pay packet, when I was 18, (am 50 now), still have loads of wear in them, also a pair of long leather boots that I was given to me when I was 16, they were 20 plus years old then, need a bit of tlc but have years left in them

I have FAL rugs - years old and still going strong and waterproof. My fylde bridle, leather headcollar over 20 years old. My weatherbeetas come to think about it are into their 5th winter. And my trusty fynalite shavings fork had it's 10th birthday recently.
Buy good quality and you'll only buy once!

I have an original (green with red binding) Rambo, brought when they 1st came out in 1980something - been going strong, never leaked & this will be the 1st winter its had 'off' duties.

Got MY old Willis pad saddle which was brought for me for my 1st pony when I was a toddler, it had the felt replaced in 1986 for my daughter to use when she was 2 - and has been in use more 'on' than 'off' since then too. (Tiny Fuzzy currently uses it).

2 old grooming kit boxes from the mid 1970's that wont die - 1 is used as a flower pot at the yard in the spring, the other used for the spring-moult brushes - the coat shedding ones

Am sure there is much more I have that is well over 30 or even 40 years old if I put my mind to it (I know there is plenty of tack but some of this has been out of use for the past 8 yrs or so as have nothing that size)

My hacking jacket is 25 years old, it did need rescuing this year as a moth had had a go at a small bit near the armhole , however a small darn has resuscitated it

A plastic hoof pick, which I got free with Horse and Pony magazine in, I think, the late 80s!

Also my mum's old metal mane comb, which must be about fifty years old.

I don't get the deal with hkm stuff. It's over priced. It's not a proper high end brand as such like pikeur, hv polo etc but seems to be everywhere at the moment.
