do you have any weird obsessions or routines with your horses? just curious coz i think im abit OCD about mouse's feet! i freak out at every little crack or chip and need to brush and moisturise them everry day :p hahah!
thats my only obsession really....apart from allwaayyss having to brush my numnah (but thats not really that weird)
so...just curious...have you got any habits you have to do every day with your horses(s)
:p:D
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

edit:
speaking of numnahs...i love buying numnahs hahah!! (and saddle cloths)
i so far have 11!!!...i know thats a bit much :D so i guess that counts too!

I used to have loads, but then had my daughter!! Lol! Spare time went out the window and I now have to be really strict with myself so I don't waste time!! Although I can't resist squaring off their beds to perfection and keeping their water clean in field!

haynets! They have be filled up ready for the week, all the same weight and neatly put on my bay in the barn

Oh and i have 2 old rug bags, one that clean numnahs go in folded neatly and one for dirty ones and they get used twice then washed ( once if they are really sweaty)

Obsessed by big straw beds & huge level bankings.
Checking for any remote sign of laminitis despite both being fine.
Bit funny about old girl not being stiff, as in I watch her roll to make sure she can still get over.
Obsessive about riding positions
General ocd about tidyness & organization, but if I wasn't organized I'd struggle to get stuff done
Like oldie still trimmed & pulled even in winter when she doesn't go anywhere.

You'll all think I'm a loony, but I check the Horsemart website religiously everyday, even though I have no chance of getting a horse! :D:D

i check Rightmove every day even though I know they update it once a week! we moved here 7 years ago and have continued to look on Rightmove ever since starting to look for this house!

and back to horsey things, I have to square up the shavings bed. it has to have neat banks all the same height, and a straight line at the front.

Banks on my bed have to reach the top of the second breezeblock and all the same width.
All haynets to be made for the week and tied up in a row in my tack room. My rugs must have all dust/dirt brushed off then folded neatley with all straps folded inside. :D

Poo picking in the field!!

I can't rest easy until I've done it! And leaving it for a couple of days for whatever reason thus resulting in an accumulation makes me feel a bit sick! Poo controls me!

Other than that, I have a slight OCD about how the mane and forlock part underneath the bridle, I like it to be just so.

Mentioned before, but beds- my banks have to be the same height the entire way around and squared off. I cant stand slopes, they must be square!

Also like a swept yard..

I think I'm sounding like a bit of a loon here, aren't I?! :D

Banks in the stable need to be at least knee high and squared, I can't stand it if there's any loose straw on the bit in front of his bed either.

I'm OCD about flies too. Mine goes out smelling like a chip shop crossed with a herbalist :p

Bottom cleaning!

My delightful horse somehow manages to get pooh in hard lumps all over his backside, down his legs, horrible job involving many baby wipes and often fingernails! I then put a slick of vaseline down the inside of his legs.

Do not get me started on cleaning the fillet strings.

You've reminded me I need to buy some more latex gloves to clean my fillet strings! Thanks :D

time runs low when children are involved! still ott on level banks and fronts of the beds being in a nice straight line though! i even have my 3 yr old daughter on it!

Straps must be in keepers, reins must not be twisted when I'm riding and have a problem with people at my RS not having their stirrups facing the correct way :)
Also another one whose bed has to have big squared, level bankings

I'm ocd about sweeping. my area of the barn has to be swept perfectly, my bed has to be properly squared off with no bits of stray straw or hay. water bucket has to be cleaned and clean water every day (surprised at the amount who don't). Horse has to be groomed perfectly daily and really clean for riding. certainly nothing in her tail and no tangles.

Less is more. I'm obsessed with not over pampering a good doer in case I ruin him, though I gaze longingly at 30% mollasses likit treats, hard feed, complex supplements, carrots, parsnips, polos, treats, beautiful warm rugs, salt licks, boots, bedding and any other way to waste my money on a problem free boy - and I still feel outrageously guilty if he just gets "just good grazing, vitamins and hay"

You bother to clean fillet strings?

I just plait up some more and bin the manky ones ;)

No OCD for me, don't have the time.

Well OK then, maybe 2 tiny ones.

Gates must be shut or fastened open - can't stand them swinging.

Leadlines have to be rolled.

Reins neck strap etc, must be back through throatlash, when mine are stabled (never if I can help it) bed must be clean enough for me to sleep on.
Feed buckets must be clean, ditto for water buckets.
Gates shut after being opened

I used to be when I was on a more strict yard.

Swept yard twice a day
Banked the muckheap into tiers
Squared off beds and banks
Poo-picking daily
My "area" was clean and tidy

Now, well, I've turned into a chillaxed sort.

My straw bed is not immaculate but deep and bouncy.
I sweep the yard once a week if lucky.
There is no muckheap.
I'm not poo-picking 15 acres!!!!
My "area" is still tidy though ;)

Hm... I'm not as 'bad' as I used to be, and at the moment I tend not to have time to do all as I would like to. I have to remind myself to let go - so long as the horses are fit and well and safe, then me stressing about sweeping under the pallet areas is just an extra stress I really don't need right now - once a month will do fine!

The things I do get ocd about are:

Bits cleaned after every use - no blinking dirty bits to go anywhere near a horse's mouth!
Reins to have no twists and the pointy end has to go through the buckle and point to the near side (don't ask! I was taught that way and I can't let go ).
Any piece of leather that touchs the horse has to be soft and supple.
When a bridle has been cleanerd, the throatlash wraps round it (crossed on the 'front' of the bridle then round to the back and through the keeper, never the buckle, and the reins are looped up onto the throatlash; nose part of the noseband then goes round the whole lot - it's how I was taught to do it :D. Used to love seeing a tack room at the end of the day with everything hung up nice, neat and clean :D).
Never run stirrup irons up on a stored saddle. Mine all go in padded saddle bags; the stirrup leathers hang down and the stirrups tuck up behind the saddle flap. That way my stirrups never mark my saddles :D.
Bridles go in bridle bags, as do the girths - I don't want a warm and steamy girth laid over my saddle and left like that for x days!
All pieces of leather that should be in a keeper must be in a keeper!
Feed and water buckets to be cleaned every day. Don't know why I bother as my horse would rather drink out of a dirty puddle lol. Grey Mare likes everything clean though, so at least she appreciates it :D
Chestnuts and ergots must be off!

I used to love a very neat bed with very firm and squared off banks, but now I don't have time to a) do it, and b) deal with the very dirty beds that three of our lot present every morning!

I like to look reasonably presentable when I'm riding, so will match jacket, glooves, boots, chaps, breeches, etc., though I haven't yet started matching it all to the horse's wear lol. She has the saddle cloth that suits her (they don't do it in fun colours), and wears boots as it's too long since I've regularly bandaged and I don't have time to practice. Hopefully I'll get back into it someday and she can wear something other than black, white or purple lol
