When jumping - "Throw your heart over first and your horse will follow"

Old fashioned one about seat - "Hands up, heels down, knees close to your horses side, elbows close to your own"

One white foot, buy him.
Two white feet, try him.
Three white feet, be on the sly.
Four white feet, pass him by.

Also a very old one my Mum says:

It aint the hunting on the heath that hurts the horses hooves, its the hammer, hammer, hammer on the hard high road'

* although it should be said dropping all the h's......

It aint the 'unting on the 'eath that 'urts the 'orses 'ooves, its the 'ammer, 'ammer, 'ammer on the 'ard 'igh road

My favourite 2:

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. ~Winston Churchill

Look back at our struggle for freedom,
Trace our present day's strength to it's source;
And you'll find that man's pathway to glory
Is strewn with the bones of the horse.

" It costs as much to keep a bad horse as a good one "

My favourite quote from a successful show producer years ago when he was still taking horses to shows in a cattle lorry:

"It isn't the wagon the horse comes out of, but the horse that comes out of the wagon!"

Change 'wagon' to 'cowshed' and it is also apt for those holier-than-thou characters who bitch about un-posh stabling.

Look back at our struggle for freedom,
Trace our present day's strength to it's source;
And you'll find that man's pathway to glory
Is strewn with the bones of the horse.

A racehorse is a horse that can take hundreds of people for a ride all at the same time.

the hardest thing about riding - is the ground.

I used to have money - Now i have horses.

A woman only needs two animals - A horse and a Jackass who'll pay for it.

Oh and one I particularly like is this definition of a horse:

'Dangerous at both ends and uncomfortable in the middle'

My favourite, which is read out at the Finale at HOYS, never fails to send a shiver up my spine and how true:

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
England's past has been borne on his back.
All our history is in his industry.
We are his heirs, he our inheritance.
