Does anyone know if many equestrian summer jobs go about? I couldn't think of a better way to spend my summer but i can't seem to find anything.. surely as demand increases during the summer more staff are needed?
Depends what you're looking for and where you're looking.
Do you want to stay at home and travel in to the yard each day, or are you happy to go elsewhere in the UK if the job includes accommodation - or would you be interested in working abroad maybe? What sort of yard? How experienced are you?
I would be looking for general yard work, turning out/bringing in, leading lessons/hacks, mucking out etc.
Location wise I would go anywhere! Providing I could source accommodation.
Yard wise I would be happy with anywhere as long as I felt comfortable with what was asked of me. I have owned my own for 5 years and been riding for 10 (pony club etc.)
There are normally less summer jobs because most places have their horses out 24/7, so no mucking out, no rug changes, no bringing in/turning out, no filling haynets/water buckets etc etc. So in general summer jobs are normally ones for people who have qualifications in teaching, summer camps etc. If there is a big equestrian centre around you then you could ask if they need help with setting up stuff for shows, and picking up poles etc?
Unless you are qualified and are good at teaching, or are an amazing rider who is experienced in training, then there really aren't that many horsey summer jobs about, that's what i found when i was looking anyway but good luck!
If you like children you could look for a summer au pair job in a horsey family. You would have accommodation with them and could help out with pony club camp etc.
If you just want to work around horses or gain work experience how about volunteering as a fence judge for eventing, or steward for local shows? RDA could always use volunteers - although I don't think thier need is entirely seasonal.
But if you are looking for paid work you are competing against everyone else who thinks they want to work with horses during the summer. You are going to need both formal qualifications, such as BHS stages or PC tests above B, and some good references. The work is there - but competition is quite tight.
