Horsey things you did as a child.......

I wasn't very imaginative - just the string mop as my trusty horse, with its white (well, grey, damp and a bit smelly) mane. Sadly mop (well my legs if we're being honest) could only canter on the right lead.

Brilliant thread :) I must admit to many of the activities as well :) Mum was always wondering where my socks and hair ribbons had gone :)

My best friend and I spent hours and hours in all weathers riding 2 builders trestles in my garden. I don't think they were very well treated, little rest, no food and string bridles and stirrups. We could make them buck, canter and all sorts. The icing on the cake came when my grandfather gave me a pair of old stirrups he had found. This was nirvana and made one of these unfortunate bits of wood seem like a real horse.

Anyway, when you look back at it, at least we were having exercise, using our imaginations and being creative, practical and mostly outside. Today's kids would probably just have a computer game!

Another who jumped a course in the back garden on a space hopper. It was great fun and I guess kept us fit (and tired!). Trouble was my brother was always a great array of male riders to pretend to be but I only had Marion Mould, Ann Moore or my favourite Caroline Bradley - showing my age well and truly here!!!!!

Many of the same things, these are so funny to read! Although I did train my (real) pony to pull a plastic sledge, including on the roads...goodness knows what my parents were thinking of letting me do that.
Off topic but there seemed to be a lot more snow in those days.

We didn't have a dog, but I used to make courses for my rabbit and guinea pig - never really worked though!

I saved up money for wooden stables, although I didn't buy breyer ones and had a different range I must have spent a good bit of money on all the models, riders, horseboxes etc. the horse lorry was my pride and joy, and most expensive. I used to rug the horses up, put them in the lorry, and make them hack and take them to competitions.

one of my models was also a little cob, so I used to make a harness for him out of string and hairbands and 'drive' him from my bed, I also did have computer games but got more fun out of my little riding school of 5 horses which I could care for and bandage myself! I managed to chip the paint off one, and mum painted her back a slightly darker brown over the chipped bit, to which I said she had a scar from her racing days (she was a thoroughbred!) and white spots from a badly fitting saddle. There was also an anglo-arab who ended up with a red mark that was a scar from a jumping injury and an arab mare who looked mean because she was protective of her foal. The little black cob was the only gelding on the yard (which frequently moved and rebuilt)

Folks,

Thanks for all your replies so far, really enjoyed reading each and every one of them, and loved the "Jennifer and Saunders" clip, so funny ! Keep them coming....

I had a large rectangular lawn which my friends and I imagined was an arena. We used to ride dressage tests but without the horse. I used to take my bicycle XC through the woods and hacking through the park and talk to it as if it were a horse. I had a stable yard of My Little Ponys and Barbie horses. I was always brushing them and plaiting them and making up stories about them.
