Anybody got any ideas for work experience with horses in Bedfordshire? Need some ideas, and to see whats out there so i can hopefully arrange work experience with them if they do it.

Thanks in advance!

Nick.

Is there anything in particular that you're after, Nick? Stud work, riding schools, groom at livery stables? There are a few event riders around here as well, who might be prepared to have you there for a few days on work exp.

Im quite interested in Livery yards, and stud farms. But our work experience lasts for two weeks, so would hopefully need to find something to do for two weeks

. Im not a confident person, and dont follow the top riders. So unfortunately dont have a great interested in event riders etc

! But livery yards and stud would be great, am also interested in "Horse whisperers" but dont want to spend two weeks with a complete fraud

:P

What about saddle fitting? I wonder if someone like Ted or Dawn at RB would allow you to shadow them for a couple of weeks, and they do a lot of fitting at the shop, so wouldnt have the problem of schlepping you around in the van.

I'll carry on having a think for you.

Do some googling, when I did mine nearly 10 years ago

I found a really large andalusian stud back in the beyonds of bedfordshire somewhere (I'm in next county). I rung them up, said "Can I come for 2 weeks?" They'd never had anyone on work experience, and organised it with the school no trouble, someone just had to go out and check where I'd be 'working.'
Stud has since relocated, but there's got to be hundreds of horsey work experience around, just got to look for it!
Yellow pages might be good start for livery yards

Yes, I had a bit of a google, And a look in the yellow pages! And was wondering if anyone had any ideas on here, Theres so many options but I just dont know what to do! Ild like to work at a stud but need to clear it with the school first :l.

Nick.

If I were you go for stud work, I used to work at a stud and LOVED it. So varied, and you learn so much! Working with the foals is amazing, you will also get experience working with stallions and maybe even help with backing the youngsters! So much more to do than working at a livery yard...go for it!

Not many will be found on google, I know all the ones near me arent. You might be better contacting your local BHS or ask around in the local equine community? Is there a local riding club/forum you could ask at?

Yes, provided you can find the right stud

The place I was at was a complete shambles, they didn't have many visiting mares - which wasn't surprising if you spent any more than 10 minutes there! Their stallion yard was relatively ok, it wasn't until you got round the 'back' that you were left open mouthed at conditions!
Nick, I told the school I'd sort my own as their horsey work experience opportunities were pants.
I found this stud, rung them up, offered free work for 2 weeks (it's all in how you present it too them!), went to meet them, gave their contacts to the school and they ok'ed it and sorted whatever paperwork was required.
Easy as that, honest!

ETA - I found the stud in a book of 'equestrian professional' local listings - no idea what it was though, 'twas lent to me.

See, thats another point. I really dont want to spend two weeks, where the place is falling to bits and with only two horses :l. There is a nice place ive seen but its a bit far to travel each day ;(

Then you just need to ask if you can have a look round, meet the horses, get an idea of what will be asked of you. Any decent establishment will be happy to help, they're getting 2 weeks work out of you!

Then ring them tomorrow

Feed store too, if they're open sundays, if not, monday.
Just bite the bullet and ring, the worst they'll do is say no, and then you just have to look again!
Good luck, and fingers crossed they'll have living for you

greenacres also a good idea - you would see alot- its a huge yard! its on the lower luton road so ten minutes from luton i reckon.good luck!
