I would be really interested to know what peeps think about this blurb from Horslyx ;

http://www.horslyx.co.uk/worried-about-sugar/why-is-sugar-important

I spend a lot of time working out have to cut down on sugar for the lad, and feeding a molasses based lick - well it doesn't sit right with me. Not least because it is hard to control intake (well it is with Shy). I picked up a leaflet about this at my feed store, and was a bit :confused:

Just wondered what others think.

What a dangerously misleading bit of 'blurb' that is! Yes, horses (and humans) need glucose, but that does not mean they need to eat lots of simple sugar - glucose is the end product of the digestion of many different feed types. And as the horse's natural feed of grass contain sugar anyway, there is not need to add extra with sugary licks, as the 'blurb' implies!

I looked at the Horslyx range and steered away from it due to the sugar content, as already has been said there is enough sugar in grass and hay without adding more.

I have a laminitic IR pony and find that Rocky's 5 Star is a very good all round mineral lick, been using it for years.

Feel very uncomfortable reading that- sounds like sales have dropped due to people being careful with sugar and they are trying to convince you it is ok. My friend is old enough to remember the health minister with a cigarette between each finger telling you that smoking was safe.

At my last yard, I went away on holiday, and when I got back, found a big Horslyx lick in my boys' shelter:eek: One of my lads is a very good doer.

I asked around, and one of the girls there said she'd bought it for her thoroughbred, and he'd not liked it, so she thought my lads would like it instead!!! I resisted ranting (as she was very nice and meant well), and also failed to mention that I'd chucked what was left of it in the bin instantly. Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
