I'm sure this has been asked before, but what are your favourite horsy films / tv shows?

I remember watching 'If Wishes Were Horses' as a kid- can't remember much about it except we used to rush home from school to watch it!

And I remember watching National Velvet, International Velvet and of course Black Beauty..

Now kids seem to watch Saddle Club (the worst acting I've ever seen!)- but it's good that there's still a series of some kind! I read all the books when I was younger..

hi,

did wishes with horses start off with a girl and her alarm clock going off then she would ride and canter past the cottage? does anybody else notice how in the saddle club the horses whinny all the time? lol. theres a film i have on tape called blue fire lady. good film! :D

Seabiscuit! Have the horse whisperer too but quite honestly don't like it that much!

I love the series on the Manchester mounted police, and got Martin Clunes Horse Power for my birthday which I keep watching over & over, how sad am I! :)

ah thank you SusannaF but thats not the one i am thinking of. wishes with horses rings a bell so i am hoping its that as ive been wondering recently what the program i used to watch when i was younger. my mum used to tape it for me! :D

I loved Follyfoot and had all of the Jill books. I seem to remember watching a series/TV prog of Follyfoot as well, plus obviously the National Velvet films.

Didn't like The Horsewhisperer, terrible film!

Loved Black Beauty but it always made/makes me cry.

Ooh yes the Jill books! They were the ones about the girl who bought the piebald gelding? And she sneakily bought jods and a jacket at an auction when she was supposed to be paying for dry cleaning or something?!

Haha, yes!! She bought a little piebald off her neighbour or something like that, kept it in her garden and ate hot buttered crumpets with jam every day :)

Quite proud to admit that I have all the Jill, Jackie, Jinny & most of the books ever written by the Pullien-Thompson sisters, and also that I at the grand age of....well older than 13, I still read then all!

Once tried to add up how much have spent on my 'pony book' collection, its scary!!!

Ruffian is the best horse film I've ever seen.... far better than seabiscuit. Watch it all on Youtube as you can only buy the DVD is the states. Get your hanky's at the ready!!!

Did not see it first time around, but I have an early memory of folly foot farm :)

Also love phar lap, and the black stallion.

Loved the my friend flicker books and a factual book called rusty's foal by sue Gibson. And of course black beauty.

I did not like the series ( music makes me cry) or any of the films until the one with Sean bean.

I remember watching when I was a kid a programme about a blind girl and a beautiful white horse, I think it was called the Moon stallion - I thought that horse was beautiful ...

Read the Jill's books, black beauty etc etc and cried my eyes out in Phar Lap... and also loved the black horse in the film Ladyhawke - brilliant scene when it enters the church ...

A bit "newer", but saddle club series! Okay it was cheesy but it quite realistic in it's own way! Used to love watching it a few years ago, every time we visited aus we got the latest video of it too. :DD

Books...
Pegasus by Robin Mckinley, not quite horses but close enough.
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
(or if you want a funny but very un-p.c version Black Beauty by Spike Milligan)
Byerley Turk by Jeremy James

T.V...

Follyfoot wins hands down. The lightning tree theme tune is playing in my head right now :)

Films...

Seabiscuit
Secretariat
Hidalgo
The Black Stallion films
Racing Stripes, zebra's count right?
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is possibly my favourite, even though it made me well up a little.

I liked the Oxus series. Fidra books have republished a number of older horse themed books recently, including these... I liked the Jinny series and the Pullein Thompson books, I just caught the Samantha Alexander books too (which I think were published just as I was progressing beyond the age where such books were considered appropriate :D

Ooh yes I remember Jinny as well. They were great!

I also had some called Black Stallion, although I can't remember them too well. I was very lucky in that one of my mum's friends was very horsy when she was a kid, so I inherited loads of horsy books and things from her. She still has a wee homebred mare her dad bred for her when she was a teenager!

I loved Follyfoot when I was nine and then when I was ten I moved to Yorkshire and used to go and play at the derelict farm that had been used for filming! I later worked at a riding school nearby and we used to ride in a lot of the areas that were used for filming so a few years ago a friend bought me a Follyfoot video which was brilliant - remembering how bridlepaths etc used to be.

I also used to ride the horse that was on the cover of the Flambards in Summer paperback -he always had a runny nose and he did on the paperback too!

I was addicted to the Jill books and anything by the Pullein-Thompson sisters and I also remember a book called something like The Horsemasters which I loved and which had probably been written in the 1940s!

Now I'm feeling old...

I LOVE Seabiscuit! :D:D:D - There aren't really many horsey films out there...

When I was a kid I used to read loads of horse books but can't remember any titles!! I had a load about an american ranch trekking centre thing??

And sometimes I put on that Horse channel on Sky but most of the programs seem a bit crap! - Unless it's coverage of an event etc..

urgh, the saddle club! worst acting, horses who whinny every 30 seconds and the brunette one who rides the chestnut in the new season has to be the worst rider i have ever seen. dont matter as much because its aimed at small children but its just so unrealistic

black beauty<3 i love that film and the book! also a bit fan of secretariat and ruffian, even though i cried for weeks after ruffian!

i <3 <3 <3 martin clunes horsepower!!!!!!!

Martin Clunes horsepower was epic - I didn't realise it had been released on DVD :D *adds to list*

I had one called Coco the gift horse about a draft horse and an implausible gift horse situation (as the title rather suggests ;) ) and Showjumping Secret about a boy who was lamed by polio taking up showjumping on a lovely grey called... well you can guess can't you, why are horsey books so unimaginatively titled? I also liked Alison's Riding Adventure and the Enid Blyton books like Five go to Mystery Moor, which involved horses.
