Horsy films / tv / books etc!

If you want a horse book that will tear at your heart strings and grip you throughout you need to read Blind Beauty - it makes me laugh, scream, shout and cry everytime I read it. If you loved the horse whisperer (the book not the film) this is 10 times better!

It is actually my favourite book EVER

Most annoyingly my mum lost my copy of it ¬¬

I loved black beauty, black stallion and sea biscuit. Have yet to see Secretariat. Books wise love Jill books and Moorland Mousie, also the heartland books and animal ark books when i was little too.

I just dug out my copy – ENORMOUS drippy bogey. Very funny :) How did they miss that?

You've obviously got the right edition! He's the big chestnut. He was an absolutely sweetheart and was in the TV series as well - I remember PMSL at the actor having to boot him to get him to go faster than walk when the rest cantered off from the front of the house.

I was going to put a photo up, but my camera ran out of batteries. He looks like a real dobbin, in the nicest way.

OMG, the bogey - I remember that!! If I'm not mistaken, the horse was ridden by the rather brutish hunting son (Mark?). I could never understand why Christine warmed to him at one point, when Will was so much nicer to her.

Loved the my friend flicker books and a factual book called rusty's foal by sue Gibson. And of course black beauty.

i had the Sue Gibson book too, and read all the Flicka books and any other horsey book i could find in the library:o

I bought my daughter the Flicka DVD's a while back, ........ok they were for me really but she did enjoy them lol, she's also got Black stallion and young black stallion, Spirit and of course Black Beauty.

best horse film has to be Secretariat, just love it and even though i've seen it plenty of times i still shout for all the races pmsl:o

The Saddle Club series! LOVED that, my friends and I even took on the names of Lisa, Stevie and Carol for most of our childhood  ! :D

Flambards as well :)

This one?

ohhh yes...

I always liked 'Fly by Night' by K.M Peyton.

She also wrote Flambards and a sequel to Fly by Night which I can't remember the name of..
I really liked 'Fly by Night' as well. I think I borrowed the first copy I read from Guildford Public Library along with Monica Dickens' 'Talking of Horses', way back in the 70s. Peyton's 'The Sound of Distant Cheering' was good too.

i watch Heartland, it has 4seasons so far new season starts next month i think. Its on E4 sometimes its ok but i find alot of horsey programmes a bit cringey to watch. Some of the acting is not great and the horses talk too much lol or do something that isnt really consistant with what usually happens in the horsey world.

Im still a sucker for Black Beauty though, makes me cry everytime.

War Horse, thats a great book, and is coming out as a film (directed by Steven Spielberg, so should be ok).
Horse Power, with Martin Clunes is lovely, you can see how much he loves his horse, and one of my family friends who took me on for work experience last year was able to sell him one of her top horses- Ben Catel. Lovely big brave lusitano horse! :)
I watched International Velvet but not National Velvet, and that was quite good. Spirit Stallion of the Cimmeron was poor, and aimed at a child rather than an adult audience. The horse whisperer is really good but it is really sad in parts and is more about the relationships developed and the interaction between the characters rather than factual western accuracy..... I used to watch the saddle club when i was eleven but the acting and riding was poor with awful storylines so quickly tired of it. I loved the Silver Brumby tv series though when i was little and The Home Farm Twins.... immense!

Ruffian is the best horse film I've ever seen.... far better than seabiscuit. Watch it all on Youtube as you can only buy the DVD is the states. Get your hanky's at the ready!!!

Secretariat isn't bad either (both books by same author) although it is a Disney adaptation so a bit of artistic license has been taken!

Phar Lap, Champions, Into the West...

My favourite films are 'Black Beauty', 'The Black Stallion' and 'Into The West' (about two Irish Boys who find a white horse but their drunk dad sells it, they steal it back etc- lovely film, highly recommend it).

I also remember a film with a coloured horse called Domingo? It was about a mail boy in the Mid West who had to cross Indian land etc. Would like to watch that again.

Also, not a proper horsey film, but loved the horse Cisco in 'Dances With Wolves!'

Favourite horsey books, anything by the Pullein Thompson sisters, also the Jill series and one of my favourites was the Half Moon Ranch series of books by Jenny Oldfield. It was set in the states and each book was about a different horse.

Tried watching heartland but couldn't really get into it, the saddle club tv program had such bad acting but the books were fab!

I love "King of the Wind" - both the book and the film, it's the story of the Godolphin Arabian. I also love Jeremy James' book "The Byerley Turk". I howl at the end when he dies.

I don't know if I'll be able to watch the film of Warhorse. It might be a little too graphic and real. I could just about cope with the stage version and the puppets.
