Horsy films / tv / books etc!

Most of my faves are already in here, but one I haven't seen mentioned is Horses Galore.
If I recall correctly, it was a sort of magazine programme for horsey kids, and was on either on a Saturday or a tea time slot (I think it was tea time).
I don't remember much about the actual programme, except that it was factual rather than fictional, and I loved it. It was late 70's early 80's.

I have recently re-bought my childhood favourite book, which was Fly by Night, and am also thinking of getting another one I remember as a kid, which was "A day to go hunting", which rather bizarrely I remember nothing of, except that it was set around Bletchley/MK.
Quite tragically, in a month's time I will be doing my first ever hunter trial, and it's all Fly by Night's fault *shame*
 
Pretty much all of those mentioned before I have read or watched but a couple I thought i'd add were Misty of Chincotege (or something like that) and the follow up books and also some really old ones about two girls called Tamsin and Rissa. I cannot remember for the life of me much more than that other than the name of one of the horses was Carillion.

On and one other, the little white horse which was about a unicorn.
 
Oh oh how could I forget the Irish RM.
Great books and great telly adaptation.
Best theme tune ever, Haste to the Wedding - I linked the into here once but it seems to have gone from YouTube :(

Was that the programme in which Keith Chegwin fell off the horse?

I'm so glad you remembered that because I was starting to think it was a figment of my imagination :D Did the titles involve a horse cantering around a park bench at some point?

Agree with most of the ones mentioned - especially The Byerley Turk book, a great read and very informative.

Has anyone read "The Nature of Horses" by Steven Budiansky? It's non-fiction but very interesting.

I can only watch horse films if I'm alone as I always blub :o

Ahhh, there was series of books about a Riding School, I have a feeling it was called Riding School, and was about a girl who had an accident on a hack and her family moved, she went to a riding school there to get her confidence back and *insert typical horsey adventured here*

And one about a Romany lad who ended up becoming a farrier!

AND the one about the owner of a riding school dyeing, and not leaving a specific will other than a certain old dresser or something being left to one of the girls that worked there. Of course the riding school ran into financial difficulties and as the bailiffs were on their way, somebody finds the hidden will in a secret drawer in the dresser! :p

Anyone remember a biography about a competitive rider who had a bad fall riding before school and the book covered her recovery from very bad injuries to being able to ride again??? Been bugging me, I read it around late 80's early 90's and it was about an english girl as far as I remember, would like to read it again but google can't find it :(
Secretariat is a great film, only saw it recently for the first time.
 
Had all the Jill books and loved Follyfoot. Saw a film on TV a few years ago about a horse and a young boy and I think he rode the horse across America to go see his father. I know it was a Disney film and was only available in the States. Was that Phar Lap or if not does any one have any idea what it is called - this is going to annoy me until I remember the name of it now!
 
I don't think anyone has mentioned Jilly Cooper's 'Riders' and 'Polo' - I'm sorry, but I really liked both of these! Guilty pleasure ;)

'Riders' on the telly was pretty awful, though!
 
Dont think anyone has mentioned Gypsy Colt It made a big impression on me when I was young. Im sure its very tame now to more sophisticated youngsters but I was entranced.

Its about a beautiful black colt who was owned by a young girl who lived on a ranch, he would meet her after school and they had a wonderful relationship. But they had a terrible drought and they were forced to sell Gypsy to a racing yard. Gypsy escaped and made his way home, he suffered many hardships and when he arrived he was covered in dust and the trainer was there but said he wasnt Gypsy because he was brown. He drove away as it started to rain which started to wash the dust off revealing his lovely black coat.

I *vaguely* remember horses/ponies galloping round a field with post and rail, but can't remember the rest of the titles. I wish there was an episode available to watch now. I'd love to see it nearly 30 years later!

It must have been a while back 'cos Cheggers was still looked like a teenager. Other childrens' TV programmes I remember that had horses were "Belle, Sebastian and the Horses", "The Flashing Blade", "Champion the Wonder Horse", "The Singing Ringing Tree" and "Doctor Who" (the unicorn in The Mind Robber). Gawd, that dates me! :D

And has anyone seen the movie 'Into the West?' about Irish travellers that find a stallion called Tir Na Nog and bring it to live in their house?! It's fantastic!!! Tried to rent it from love film but they dont have it :(

Also... The last unicorn.. anyone seen this? again, amazing! I was obsessed when I was younger!

And the kids book 'Black Dolly'... I used to sob it when my mum read it to me!!
 
Any one seen touching wild horses? jayne seymour on a remote island with wild horses, bit cheesy but passed a couple of hours it was on dvd from love film.

the book is called "fighting back" by Georgina Colthurst Swan hill press ISBN 1-85310-391-8 who suffered serious brain injuries in a riding accident in 1977. I recommend this book - fantastc determination of a young girl :eek:
 
Ahh, nostalgia!

There's so many, Flambards has to be top, I had to wait years before K.M. Peyton wrote the 4th one. I still read them now.
Anyone read "La Bruja" about an incredibly fast, but mean and ugly Argentinian mare? With illustrations by the great Victor Ambrus.
