I just had a quick look.... tried to go through process of ordering a rug. There's nothing obvious to tell me I'm ordering from outside the UK. Prices are in £, and unless you open the Ts and Cs (and honestly, how many of us do that, especially if it's a brand name we well recognise, I know I don't) then I wouldn't know to expect it's coming from overseas, and wouldn't be expecting extra charges.

I find it a bit baffling that you wouldn't look properly at the Ts&Cs, shipping etc at the moment though, especially since the company name is a bit of a giveaway. It's not like Brexit is a secret or the general confusion and problems around tax, vat, shipping etc have been hidden and unreported.

When I order online at the moment I make a big effort to check all these details and even then if it's a UK company I go into it with an understanding it's about 60/40 it will actually arrive. Lots of .ie websites with prices in Euros are UK based still. I'm not happy about it but I don't blame the companies, provided they are doing their best and respond ok to emails etc. I keep the blame for those that deserve it (the current UK government mostly).

I have stopped buying from Horze due to the issue of returning a product back to the EU. I had to go through the maze of custom forms and then try and figure out the right codes to use etc. It was such a phaff that I can't be asked to do it again. In my mind, EU companies should have a downloadable form for returns with all the custom side of things filled in. I don't think I paid an import duty though. It is just crazy as companies are the ones that are suffering, on both sides as we will all just stop buying from 'overseas' European companies which in turn will spark some companies in the UK lifting their prices for EU procured items due to no competition.

If it is a brand name I know, and a .co.uk website then no I probably wouldn't trawl through Ts and Cs.... I probably should , and now would now I have seen this example. But I can see it would be easy to make the OP's error.

I've put red rectangles around the bits that could easily lead me to believe that I would not be charged any extra taxes or duties when ordering from Horze.co.uk.

I didn't want to risk ordering such an expensive item, so I had a go at ordering a pair of socks for delivery to the UK (my mum's address).

Again, tax has been included in the order, and is shown in Pounds Sterling.

It would not be unreasonable to think that Horze has a warehouse in the UK, pays any import duties when shipping from the EU to the UK and then charges just UK VAT when selling goods to individuals.

Why is the name “Horze” a giveaway? It’s not like brand names don’t make plays on words or change their spelling.

Also they are not doing their best because it would be simple to put something in their customer journey not in some separate attachment that you get after purchase and certainly don’t say anything in their T&Cs about customs just that shipping is free! They’ve never responded to my email either.

Anyway I actually don’t know if I’m liable for extra charges just that I’ve been asked to fill a form out. I’m just making sure I understand my obligations before I respond which I will today as I’ve got a bit more time.

Thanks Keith that’s really helpful. I’m not a stupid person and generally pretty cautious.

Actually, I'd argue your first rectangle. It merely means you've selected the UK/English version of their website. Which would mean there are multiple versions/languages offered. This does not infer anything about being UK based, IMO.

I'm a bit cross with Horze at the moment because I'm still missing my order from October. They used to be decent. Quick, and also good with returns.
