phew! Im ready for a glass of wine and a hot bath i think! twig my 4 year old decided to have a nappy/rearing paddy out on our ride round the fields tonight. There are a set of small barrels on their side which we have trotted over confidently before and tonight she decided she wasnt going anywhere near them - cue spinning round, rear then nap. Spun her round in a couple of small circles and then sent her over them (a bit sticky) turned to jump them again to get a nice jump, again spin, nap, rear, plant and kick out with hind legs. Turning in tight circles seems to be the way forward with this though she does try and go to bite your leg when you do this! she then went off forward and gave me a lovely jump over them then decided to leave it there.

my gangly 4 year old racer is gaining weight, strength and a top line and deciding to try it on!!! she has a newly fitted saddle, teeth etc are checked and she has tried it out once or twice in non jumping situations so i can safely rule out pain.

On a happier note, she went to her second ever show the other week to do a prelim test and duly won!

so all hope is not lost yet!

sounds as if you're doing the right thing. i'd have a short whip in the hand on the side i'm turning her to (does she usually go the same way?) so if she tried to bite my leg, she found the whip instead! i would never hit a horse on the head/muzzle, but i think finding the whip in the way might surprise her enough to stop her trying to bite you, the little madam!

I usually do try and carry a whip althopugh she has never tried to turn round to bite me before! if i smack her when she naps/rears she just goes up higher so turning her in the opposite direction by spinner her seems to work - shes a wee bit thick so suddenly turning her in the opposite direction makes her go 'oh ok then' and go forward.

shes bags of talent, my tummy does a somersault when she jumps and as the results and comment sheet form the dressage show she really is stunning but very occasionally she has started to throw her hog out and turn into a stubborn cow! For the moment im simply putting this down to her growing up, and getting stronger rather than being a 'bad' horse but i did think when she turned round with a face like thunder to go for my leg 'you little b***h'. At no point tonight did i lose my rag tonight as it just makes her worse but i was very confident with my voice and aids and turning her quickly and i think she certainly got the message that this behaviour isnt on!

horses with character eh?..........according to my instructor turn out to be the best, i sincerely hope shes right!

my mares or arwens?

im afraid im a bit out of the loop as to how arwens horse is going as i havent been on here for a few weeks!

my mares hasnt got worse in its intensity or occurence, like i say its maybe only one a week she has tried it (probably 4 times in total), its a very recent thing which my instructor is simply putting downt o her becoming stronger, more muscle and more wieght and simply trying it on as she is growing up.

Which one?

No, really she's fine - not got any worse but still has the tendency for the odd rear and temper tanty.
Sometimes she'll get on the lorry happy as larry and then other times she'll want an hour long fight!

Hormones?....
