Hello everyone

I am a veterinary student, and I am working closely with many vets to get the Hot Branding of Horses banned in Scotland. This is supported by the BVA and BEVA.

We have now got a petition in parliament, and need as many signatures as possible before 26th Feb. There is information about branding on the petition.

If you could sign it to show your support it would much appreciated.

Here is the link:

http://epetitions.scottish.parliament.uk/view_petition.asp?PetitionID=374

And for those who have never seen branding, here is a link to a video of branding:

Thank you so much for your help,

Claire

Why do you want to have it banned?

It is another way of having a visible deterrent.

Both hot branding/freeze marking work by causing scarring. It does cause pain but only for a few seconds and then the nerves are burnt away. For both methods the hair is clipped off. The smell of hot branding can put people off. Personally I believe there are more pressing long term issues that leave greater prolonged suffering to equines.

The youtube commentary at the side is not very balanced. The participants in the video, did you have their permission as they are clearly identifiable.

I don't like that vid at all, it does not give a true story of branding IMO. After having AHS on our yard in Spain, ALL horses had to be branded when they had received their innoculation. We branded them on the shoulder, with an X, and we did it in an open yard and not one horse out of about 50 I was involved with reacted like that.

couldnt watch the end.... yes should be banned. its like us being burnt with something thats so hot it kills the nerves (i know working in a kitchen) it hurts like hell.
surely we can just freezemark - my horse didnt flinch when she was freezemarked. or microchip exmoor ponies.

QR why were they branding such an old exie-they are usually done as weanlings? I have 2 exies and a luso and they all have multiple hot brands. hot branding is quicker than freeze branding, where the brand is left on for longer.
I dont really have strong feelings either way, as they've been done I dont need to freeze brand as as the luso is grey his hot brands look better and stand out more than a freeze brand. the exmoor foal is also chipped as they now have to be. worse things are done to exmoor ponies than hot branding them IMO.

I would hardly say that piece of 10 year old film is typical of the way hot branding takes place.

How many ponies/horses have you seen hotbranded exactly exmoorpony? I have watched I don't know how many being done - me actually there present watching the process - and I have never ever seen one done as badly as that.

I would add though that having as many brands as an Exmoor pony has can't help, the New Forest pony just has the one brand usually. Certainly only one brand done at a time, and the whole process is generally much more relaxed. The brands are heated in a fire, the ponies are branded in the open air with their "friends" close by in the pound. I had my own 2 yo filly branded, the Forest ones are branded/wormed in something which is more like a wooden cattle crush, she was just beginning to register something was going on when it was time for the hot brand to come off. There was definitely no distress of any kind from her, she was more interested in the apple I was feeding her at the time than what the Agister was up to.

Sorry, but I disagree with your point of view and am not prepared to sign your petition

Finally, why did that vet who microchipped that pony not intervene with a bit of ACP when it was so obviously not happy, oh and why was that pony so old before being branded?

I will not be signing the petition either.

I am another person who is not convinced that hot branding should be banned. I have dealt with many horses and ponies over the years that have been branded and do not seem to suffer any ill effects.

If the vets are convince that hot branding is so bad why is freeze branding not being included. A cold burn can hurt just as much as a hot burn

I would also like to add that I am not the biggest fan of microshipping after watching my poor filly have one last year and the discomfort to her, ther is no guarentee that it mon't move either.

I've signed, if only to stop these particular people branding anymore ponies!! they weren't very good were they, as they had to brand over & over again, & why did they micro chip? if branding is for tracing/recognition etc there was no need for it, unless the brand mark fades? in which case it's pointless to brand in the first place!!!

Interesting video - and shows the importance of having these things done by a professional.

I actually think it's a totally barbaric, and am very happy to support the petition to ban it.

Sorry but I won't be signing your petition either!
I have an exmoor pony and have had a fair bit to do with them. That video does not show an accurate account of what actually goes on!
My pony has suffered not ill affects from hot branding at all!
Is good to clip and hot shoe!

It is an excellent way to tell which pony is which without causing un necessary stress to wild ponies! To identify by mircochip everytime would mean they would need to be caught or rounded up!
If they are chipped or no branding is visible it appears they can be mistaken for other animals!!!

Ditto this

If you ban hot branding, freezmarking should also be banned. I've had horses over the yrs freemarked, and they all needed sedating, my girl was done shortly after I got her 11 yrs ago(before I knew better), she was sedated, twitched, had a front leg held up and was still throwing herself about!

We had a foal branded last yr, she stood next to her mum, 1 second brand on and off, foal didnt jump at all! afterwards she turned around to look at the man that did it, he put the iron down and came to give her a rub, no problem. She was never sensitive about it after either, whereas the horses with freemarks were sensitive in that area for weeks / months afterwards
