We have a black Friesian gelding and in this hot weather he is getting really hot and sweating just standing out in the field...

We have tried UV rugs etc but he still sweats....

Anyone any suggestions? we have even thought of clipping him even though he has his summer coat...
 
If he has a long mane put a loose running plait in. We have a little pony on the yard who gets very hot and she has a long long mane (well below her neck). Plaiting it up so her neck is cooler seems to really help her. It isn't really a solution but it might help a little bit.
 
He does have a thick mane but not too long as he has managed to scratch the some out but its growing back... if we put him in he gets hot also - stables not really shaded - have tried a uv rug to stop the sun rays baking him but still have same probs... dont know what else to do really...
 
maybe bring him in and put one of those Equine N ICe rugs on, or keep him in a fly rug all day, the Amigo Bug Rug is good at reflecting light, my ISH is a very dark bay a used to sweat, now with his fly rug on he is perfectly happy.
 
I have a Kool Coat on my horse as he suffers with the heat as is very dar, and so far am really impressed. Think on really really hot days (high 20s) would prob still bring him in though it may be ok -its the rugs first summer so not got to that temperature yet! Am very impressed with it so far as up to about 23 degrees it keeps him much cooler where as before he would be sweating in the field. Only thing is they are a combo though think the older ones had a detachable neck (or guess you could cut the neck off the rug if trapping his thick mane underneath made him too hot?) They are made by Weatherbeeta and are about £28, they are different to the Airstream Combo as they are purely cotton, not sure what the Airsteam Combo is like but I like the KoolCoat because its 100% cotton and was recommended it. Hope all this waffling helps!

my old love has cushings so she has a coat like a yeti, she also sweats stood still. i have clipped her but she still hots up.

i use a plant sprayer, the pump up pressure kind with a wand, set on mist with luke warm water and a little vinegar in it, when i bring her in i mist her, it is not such a shock to the skin as cold hosing so not unpleasant at all, since the wand sprays at all angles you can get just about every where,

as well as the back, neck etc she likes to be sprayed under the tail and up under the udder area as well as between the back legs and the chest & elbow area.

i also use 2nd one to apply fly repellent,

she comes into our barn alone and sort of asks to be done now.
i find it helps wash the excess salt off her skin or she gets sore,

if she is very hot (we had 30 deg inside last week here) i put an old beach towel damp over her too - you might find a spare rug works well wet instead.

an old pony i had long ago was sorted..... he just lay down in the pond.
