I think there may of been a post similar a while ago, so please accept my appologies!

Horsey came in yesterday very very hot and extremely dozzy, VERY unlike him. He's dark bay and had been out all day in the sun. He wasnt himself at all last night.
Is there some sort of turn out rug, that will help keep him cool? Or even some thing for in the stable aswell?

When we, or any mammal, get too hot we loose salt. Electorlytes replace these salts. He may well appreciate having them put back in to his system, and will feel much better for it.

We feed them routinely through the summer when hot.

ah, so would you feed electrolytes in their breakfast or tea then? Only ever fed electrolytes after work when its hot or they sweated a lot.

My black horse gets like this and I've tried loads of different mesh weave light coloured rugs and he just gets hotter.

I try to at least go down and sponge him off midday when it's really hot and hose him before he goes out/when he comes in.

Tried turning out at night and in during day and he gets even hotter in the stable out of the breeze (if there is any!)

thanks Amymay and K&R will do

I posted in the stable yard last week.

I was advised to use a weatherbeeta Kool Coat rug (white cotton not mesh).

If I remember correctly last year there was imformation provided that wet horses which have been hosed far from cooling them down made them hotter / burn.

Our stables are in a barn and can get like an oven. When it is warm in there (as opposed to baking!) I put a fan on him - suspended from the ceiling.

Yes, Id heard the same about hosing then turning them out, it atracts the sun and they burn.

Did you get one of the rug? Does it work? How much was is?

I have a Kool Koat for Pride, I bought one last year after a recommendation form here

I really like them and they seem to work for P anyway. P is white, so should reflect the sun naturally but because he is pinked skinned, he burns. I turned him out in his for the first time this year on Saturday and even through the hottest parts of the day he remained cool. I checked him a number of times and he wasn't hot at all.

Nice & Cool

Haven't bought the rug yet as the nearest tack shop didn't have my size. My YO has one and it looks like a thin summer sheet and this is what she uses it for! Didn't realise it wasn't a summer sheet until I saw the label!

The Kool coat inc separate neck cover is on offer by Weatherbeeta for April at £22.99. Online 4dobbin have them for sale at the price. I'm hoping to visit their store one day this week to pick one up and save on postage.

TBH I tried so many light coloured / silver coloured fly rugs last year that cost 2 or 3 times the price of the Kool coat and didn't work that I think it is def worth a go. I can PM you what I think when I have one if you want (poss pics too!)

Where did you get it from? How much was it?

I found the size fine; Pride is usually 6'6 but can some times squeeze into a 6'3. I got him a 6'6 so that there would be more room for air to circulate etc and have had no problems with it!!
