Just last week my 3 horses were all in medium weight rugs, out 24/7 in the cold and rain and now this week its roasting!!!
My youngster doesnt seem too bothered- all he does is stand in the field anyway! My mare seems very switched off, and just cant be bothered. But generally ok!
But my mothers very hair cob isnt doing too well, alot of lying down and sweating.. got his mane in a running plait just now to try keep his mane out of the way, does anyone have anyother tips?
Hes got access to water and a small stream, a fair bit of shade too. hes mostly white with very little brown.

Any tips advice is very much welcome!

If the cob has a very thick coat it might be worth clipping - I used to clip mine about every 3-4 weeks in the summer as he really hated being so hot, also used to keep him in during the day and turn out at night to avoid the worst of the heat and flies.

He was fully clipped all winter so he isnt really that hair as such, but hes always been a sweaty horse ( if that makes sense) Hel be kicking eighteen this year so trying to keep him as comfortable as poss!

Thankss guys!

My Coblet baby is sweating poor chap, but like others have said as long as plenty of water and shade it won't be a problem :-)

My husband is a fire fighter and he's just been called out to a barn fire, can you imagine being in full tunic, gloves, leggings and woollen head thingy (lol) in this weather beating a fire out...hmmmmmm think he will need clipping!! XX

My partner is a fire fighter too and says it's a nightmare wearing all the kit in this hot weather when called out on a shout

Bath and clip is what I would do. Do you have a stable he could come out of the heat when its at its hottest? He may appreciate it if its cool. Where my mare is the stables are within a barn and its like a fridge in there. She enjoys the break from the sun. If you do clip its advisable to use a fly rug to prevent your horse overheating as they cant trap the cool air between their coat when clipped.

mine is very lathargic and looks uncomfy. i sponged down the sweety bits and gave her a general cold shower in the middle of today and yesturday. she wants it so much i dont have to even head collar her i can just do it in the field loose. she does have shade but generally would rather just be cooler. there is a bit of a breeze in her field that is helping. also check they done get sun burnt i know my mare does on her shoulder.

My Mare is very lathargic and grumpy looking! Going to bath her tonight as competing tomorrow- not sure about this heat for that though! Lots of water and sponges will be onboard!

My 3 all have pink noses! so all sun creamed up!!

My daughter works 7 till 6 and still does her horses twice a day. Sorry to sound harsh but those hours between two of you is perfectly possible.

sorry, but you don't know our personal circumstances. I posted on here to see if anyone had any advice.
Stabling my horses would be an I deal solution but isn't do-able for us at this moment in time. You don't know how far / close the yard is, or what the YO allows.

In an ideal world we would all have lovely houses with big stable blocks, and field shelters. the freedom to do what you want and when you want.
A Girl can dream!!
Until then, I'll need to make do with what I've got, *sighhhhhhhhh*

if bringing them in isnt an option and only being able to go up once a day (lots of people do, Im not judging) then there isnt alot else you can do!!
maybe for a week you could (if personal circumstances allow ) go up to bring him in/hose him off.

the problem is that the heat has come so fast and so full on that they havent had time to acclimatise. I have altered my horse's routine from being out in the day to being out at ngiht because he is struggling in the heat and he is a TB.

I'd be there twice a day if I could but I can't. So I'll just need to make do with what I can do.
They have water, the have shelter, plenty of fly spray, his manes plaited up. I'm doing my best, and that's all you can do I'm afraid

I feel a bit spoilt now. My new Boy is Dark Bay Cob and is feeling the heat really badly.

I get him in during the day and if I ride hose him down after and pop him in his lovely cool airy stable. And to think when I moved on to the yard I thought oh dear stables in an old Cow Byre we wont be able to groom in the sun now I think Yipee when its raining I can muck out without getting wet and in this weather a breeze blows through gently cooling him.
