Hot shoeing branded horses?

Has anyone had any problems/reservations about hot shoeing horses which have been branded, usually with stud/breed marks as youngsters? I know of a few people and farriers who have said they are very reluctant to hot shoe them etc. Do you think being branded can have an effect for the future, or is it all in the way they are handled and the shoeing is done? Just interested.

Mine was a bit twitchy of having his branded leg handled when I first got him, but patience and time means I can pick it up with ease now, and the farrier has always been very good with him and it causes him no problems at all.

I think its like everything with horses, it's how you approach it that matters.

No problems with mine, nor any of the ones I've looked after. Interesting point though.

Never had a problem but then we make sure the young horses are on the yard to see/smell the older horses being shod from an early age.

Unless they need shoeing we just have them trimmed as we don't do a lot of hacking.

How on earth can this be association?

I've owned and still own hot branded ponies and none has a problem with being hot shod.

Kelly Marks would LOVE this theory.

No difference at all when my horse is shod.

Goodness me! this was just a general wondering after hearing some horse owners and farriers opinion on the matter. It's not a theory, just a topic of conversation!

I got my horse as a 6 year old and she had never been shod and is not branded. It has taken her a long time to get used to the smoke from being hot shod as she was very frightened of it - ok now though! My farrier says it is a natural instinct for them to be frightened of smoke and fire.

I don't understand the association to be perfectly honest. I do know of tonnes of branded youngsters (this was common practice until this year in Argentina) that are no trouble at all to hot shoe

It never, ever occurred to me, I had my branded NZTB hot shod loads of times and never considered that he might make an association! (he didn't)

Captain is cold shod now, but was hot shod and he is fine. But you cannot get within 10 feet of him with clippers. Not sure if it is to do with his being hot branded

Nope, all the polo ponies I have known that have been branded have never had any problems with hot shoeing.

I've never ever heard of a case where its a problem. Lots and lots of hot branded New Forest Ponies around here, all of which behave themselves perfectly when hot shod, this would be a good area in which to find out if there was a link due to the high numbers of hot branded animals about which are shod.

I've never connected it with branding, but I do have a branded horse who is scared of being hot shod. Interestingly he is also scared of anything that makes a shooshing noise, such as fly spray and the hosepipe if it has a sprayer on it (he is fine with water if there is no noise though), and gravel being raked. Apart from this he is pretty brave with anything.
