Hopefully getting a new horse (!!!) on sunday, and he is currently being hot shod with broad webbed shoes. The pony I currently have has only ever been cold shod. What are the main differences? Do I need to find a different farrier? Price? Advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks! :D

Hot shoing generally gives a better fit, and is far more common. It's your choice though. No idea if there is a difference in price.

As Donkeymad says, hot shoeing will give a better fit because it makes the shoe "bespoke" for your horse. With cold shoeing, it's off-the-peg so some fits will be better than others. Not sure if there's a difference in price and not sure if cold shoes come off more easily or have to be replaced more often.

Hi my horse was cold shod before i brought him so the first time i had him shod i told my farrier and he said he will only hot shoe as you get a better fit. I pay £65 for a full set.(im in northampton i think prices will vary as to the area you are in)

just out of interest how much do you pay for a set of cold shod?

My farrier hot shoes and i don't think it is any more expensive. I think you get a better fit as they can shape the shoe better. I love the smell too lol.
I asked my friends farrier why he didn't hot shoe and he said that the metal these days is so malleable that he can shape it well enough without heat. If horse has only been hot shod it doesn't mean that it always has to be. Why don't you call your farrier and ask what he thinks.
