Just looking for opinions really.

We've really had to search to find a farrier who hot shods.... have had to use cold shoers in the meantime, who, to my inexperienced eye, seem to trim the hoof to fit the shoe.... instead of shaping the shoe to fit the hoof.

I've come back to the horsey world after a good 10-15yr break, so was just looking for opinions on hot vs cold. To me hot was important because the shoe is shaped to fit the foot. Happy to say we have found a brilliant young farrier who has done a fantasic job on his feet today :D

Please no barefoot discussions btw... (ducks) :o

God this is going to sound bad however I put it because I am a social retard! Hence why I work with animals lol!

But those of you who have cold shoers please step up and sing their praises.... I just don't get it - it's gotta be hot for me - but cold shoers get plenty of business so they must be doing something right?

Haha I just don't see the point of not hot shoeing, but then we must have plenty of farriers here :-) the main thing is I think they come off more easily if done cold.

Aww mandwhy we're nearly on page 2! Hot shod obv a boring topic!

We really had to search to find a hot shoer - and he is ace - well worth the search!

:D

My mare has been cold shod in the past as she was a bit nervy of the smoke and the furnace going. However, my farrier just works harder to make sure the shoe is still fitting - yes it is easier to fit when it is hot, but to my little knowledge, he still does a good job.

Unfortunately for you I'm in Cornwall, and I'm not letting my farrier leave the county!!! ;)

Now my mare is better and more 'practiced' at being shod, she is usually shod hot

I found it was the opposite! I got my horse cold shod when i first got him as it was the only farrier prepared to come out in the snow but he's been making a really good job of my horses feet i decided to stick with him and when he was off ill for 6 months i got him hot shod and he was forever losing shoes, hence why i keep them cold shod now

I had a new farrier cold shoe my mw/hw irish cob this week and I was extremely pleased. He spent a long time making the shoes the right shape for my boy. He said that when his vehicle is kitted out properly next week he would be hot shoeing most horses as the shoes stay on longer but also if they have large feet like my boy trying to alter the shoes whilst cold makes his joints ache because he has to hit them so hard with his hammer.

I much prefer horses to be hot shod they do seem to stay on better and most horses do not seem to mind.

I have a horse who cannot be hot-shod. I've never had much of a problem with shoes coming off in the past, we went without for about eight years and now he has fronts on again (will be coming off as soon as) with a new farrier, he has had no problems with loose shoes at all. They've never been better in fact. I asked my farrier about it and he says it's easier for him to shape the shoe hot, but it doesn't seem to make any difference as to how long they stay on for. Some horses with 'challenging' feet have to have the shoes heated, or he'd not get the shape right.
