The ginger loon managed to half rip off TWO shoes in the stable last week (don't ask) and the vet's been down as one of the re-shod feet is hot. He's taken the shoe back off and although he's not hopping lame (only 2 10ths) advised to tub him for a few days to draw the bruising out. Now, we've poulticed many, many times before but not hot tubbed. Any tips, should I managed to get ginger monster to stand long enough in the tub to have any effect! I'm wondering here about what, if anything to put in the water - Epsom salts? How much etc?

Large rubber bucket, 1 - 2 inches of warm enough water to be OK for you to put your hand in but bear in mind that the warmer the better especially as it will go cold quite quickly. Epsom salts - you can get these from any chemist - good handful.

Haynet/feed or both! Quiet corner away from hustle and bustle but somewhere that the horse is used to and can relax in and lots of patience! Tub for as long as you can until the water goes cold is good.

You might need a helper to pick up opposite hoof or to hold head just until he is settled. I find that most horses will just stand in the water once they have got used to the sensation.

Oh and 2 x a day for 4 or 5 days.

Agree with mcnaughty.

I had to hot tub my mares feet, I used the small tuff trug - just a bit deeped than a feed bowl. I used hot water and epson salts and made sure she had a haynet :) I sat next to the foot that was in the water on my small step ladders and just held her leg, if I felt movement I held firmly and said ah, ah.
