My 10 yr old lurcher has developed hotspots for the first time and I was wondering if anyone had good tips on dealing with them. He and our other dog were in kennels all last week when we were on holiday, one they have been to before with no problems. Our other dog (lab) is showing some signs on a front paw but the lurcher has really gone to town on his elbows and back. I'm wondering if it could be stress related or something they picked up at kennels? They are on a very quality food (no filler, no chicken) get two walks a day one of which is all off-lead and I am home all day so they have plenty of company and attention. Any thoughts or recommendations for OTC remedies?
 
if they both have it I would suspect, fleas, cleaning products etc have caused a problem, maybe they are not true hotspots but a reaction.what have the vets said as it would be really unusual (not impossible though) for them both to come up with them for the first time
 
If fleas are not present, have you taken him somewhere new recently? Mine were caused by the new environment of the woods near here. They were very easily and quickly cleared by clipping away the hair, keeping it dry and puffing on athletes foot powder-miracle cure!
 
Def no fleas, but the kennels did groom them which they haven't done before. Thinking that might be the culprit. I spoke to the vet and she said clipping back the hair, using an antibiotic cream and an Elizabethan collar should help. I'm going to try hypocare as I have some on hand and if he is still bad on Friday take him in to get some oral AB's. Might speak to the kennel too to find out what products they used. Thanks all!
 
The hypocare seems to be working, he's been leaving his elbows alone so that's a big positive. I'm still taking him in though as I was giving home a really good once over and found that he has a run of dry scabs all along his spine in clumps from the base of his neck to mid back. He's long-haired so I hadn't noticed before. He's also shaking his head a fair bit and seems generally itchy. Now I'm concerned the problem may be mites or similar nastiness.
