Hounds kill a cat

A family on the edge of our village used to keep Lurchers. By the time we proved that their dogs were running free the local cat population had been decimated. Extremely sad but 'nature red in tooth and claw' I'm afraid.

I do think that's terribly sad, and feel real empathy for the owners, but by golly were they lucky to get the poor cat back in such a good state - I'm surprised there was much left of her at all :( And it does sound like a decent apology is lacking.

On another tack though - why do the papers feel it necessary to show the dog food bag? Is that really newsworthy?

So awful, poor poor puss.

But looking at the carcase its hard to see a mark on her, which isn't what you'd expect if hounds had "had a go" at her, which makes me wonder whether it was maybe the shock of the attack more than the attack itself which proved fatal??

A very tragic incident; its a pity the old couple didn't know the hunt would be around on the ROW outside their house though coz they could have kept pussy in then. Not much comfort now though.

'it looks like the hunt cleaned the cat up and gave it back which is as much kindness as they could show in the circumstances'

You really think so? ....Jeez!

Shows so well the compassion of the hunt to return a pet that was so obviously cherished by its owners to return her in a used dog food bag....(what terrible irony)
If they had no blanket or such, surely returning the poor cat's body in a huntsman's arms would have been more appropriate....and indeed, human.
This does the hunting fraternity no favours at all. The cat obviously cat meant nothing to them, but I'm sure she meant the world to her owners after 18 years...good age for a cat, shame her life had to end so ignominiously and with no regard to her owners' feelings.
Use and discard may be the attitude of a lot of huntsmen and women, but not to other animal owners.

Absolutely disgraceful.
My heart goes out to the owners of poor Moppet.

Oh yes, it is... it shows the complete lack of compassion shown by those involved.

I've got to be honest if my pet was returned dead, the last thing on my mind would be what it was returned in. However this thread is raging in NL where I'm sure your thoughts are echoed!

As ever I would caution you to understand that newspaper reports do not always contain the full story. I can also confirm that there was a full, timely and sincere apology made to the owners.

I would be truly horrified if this happened to any of my cats. And I dont think it was "kind" of them to clean the cat up afterwards, I wouldnt want the hunt touching my poor cat after that. This is exactly why I am so pleased we dont have hunting up here in NE Scotland, why on earth should people have to keep their cats in purely because of this ridiculous 'sport'.

You worry about the cat being in a used food bag - when my cat was found dead on the side of the road the council picked him up and put him in the dog waste bag as in poo bag. Quite a mess when we collected him to bury him in the garden.
