Hi, I need some extra part time help with horses over winter, excersising, turning out/bringing in, brushing off, sometimes mucking out, occasionally helping at a competition at the weekend etc. What do people pay on an hourly rate for this sort of thing please? I have a couple of people interested and asking what the pay is. I can't afford to be too generous but would like to be fair. I'm not talking a pro rider here or anything just people who have a decent amount of experience. Also what position would I be if somebody I was paying had an accident riding or handling one of my horses? I have BHS gold membership which I think covers some public liability, as I understand it, if one of my horses caused an accident I would be covered? Can anybody please advise? Many thanks.

£7-10 depending on number of hours ie £10 if only one hour to make it worth their while. If money changes hands then public liability etc won't be covered by your insurance. Best bet is to ensure that the person has their own care, custody and control insurance if doing handling jobs and rider insurance if they are exercising.

When I was pregnant I paid £9 an hour for someone to do everything except riding, I'd have thought riding would make it cheaper cos that's the fun part but that's just me I guess.
I think it's their responsibility to be insured as a freelance groom so I'd just ask for a copy of their certificate, your BHS insurance won't help as someone employed by you is not a 'third party' you have a contractual relationship with them so not covered.

It really is a minefield!

I'm told you need Employers' Liability Insurance even though you have unpaid volunteers. (So I've got it, costs a small fortune along with Public Liability).

Also, does BHS insurance with standard membership cover paid work with horses belonging to others?

And when do travel expenses and/or occasional pocket money become wages and subject to regulation?

No wonder so many prefer not to employ anyone!

Not sure on the others but this is certainly a No, their web site is pretty clear (now after so many of us having complained as it used to refer to riding only which was daft!!)

"The Public Liability Insurance provides cover for any third party injury or property damage that arises out of your legal liability/negligence as a BHS member. This is in respect of riding/handling of horses and must be for recreational purposes only."

If you are being paid it is not for recreationa purposes only.

http://www.bhs.org.uk/membership/insurance-faqs - there is also a link here to the full 20 page actual insurance doc which if you're bored says this in the proper legal speak!!

I pay our part time groom £10 in the winter - she does anything that needs doing for the ponies ( feeding/winter field management, changing rugs) and will include riding one of them. She has her own insurance.

You have also to be careful how you employ them. If they work only for you, or when you asked they could be classed as employed. So make sure they are a true freelance and work as and when they are available. Have a good read of what is classed as self employed on the government website.

Thanks all, it does sound like more hassle than its worth but I really do need the help :-( I can't imagine the girls that are interested have their own insurance but I will ask. There don't seem to be any true freelance grooms in the area, not that I can find anyway! Very useful info, many thanks!
