House rules for your dogs?

Our border collie has never needed to be taught manners. He's even invented a few rules for himself.

He doesn't go into the kitchen, apparently he feels that it's not appropriate. He won't go upstairs unless my father is away in hospital and he thinks it necessary to guard his bed. He won't go on sofas unless you really insist. He waits until he's asked to eat his dinner. He is very respectful of cats, although I think our old boy Sylvester taught him that one.

I have taught him to sit before crossing a road, just because it seems safer, and not to walk behind horses. He also wouldn't be allowed to beg or jump up but he's never had to be told. He's a superstar.

Firstly, he is absolutely beautiful. Secondly, this is why I just love collies. For the right type of owner, they just know, do, behave as you want without any need to ask or tell them.

Parsons JRT
Not allowed upstairs or on furniture. Must lie down and wait for permission to eat her dinner. If she gets in the way at mealtimes is sent out the room. Recall is much better than it used to be and she will now shut the door on command. ;) Barks once to be let in or out. Has to wait for permission to get in or out of car. Must travel on the floor of the front passenger well, sitting or lying down ( did have a cage but she took the bars off :0).
Haven't managed walking on lead without pulling but improving not jumping up at visitors.
Her Rules
All squirrels, rats and a lot of birds must be barked at - properly.

2 family dogs, Old Labrador, working gundog and my best buddy, has never and won't get on furniture, never 'mooches' at tea time and stays in the living room, nowhere near dining area, doesn't entertain the thought of upstairs or annoying the cat or eating the cat food, and used to wait by the back door at nights to be allowed to his kennel, knows to wait till hes told to cross roads, 'car' came to mean sit on B roads, never interested in any games of fetch unless there was game to pick up, also the best mentor for the bratty 3 year old Hungarian Vizsla since she was 8 weeks old, he's absolutely faultless really, best dog to take biking or running, keeps out the way and never bothered the horses. The bratty 3 year old Vizsla on the other hand, is known as the 'needy dog', meets you at the front door, makes a whiny noise if you don't speak to her, turns her nose up at treats she doesn't like, but she is good, comes to call, walks on or off lead and always to heel until told, stops and waits to be sent on or called back, doesn't go on furniture, gets off when told on the odd occasion she's on the furniture, waits to be allowed her dinner, she's still curious of the cat and feels it needs a lot of chasing through the house until it runs upstairs and hides, cat food is dog food, likes to chance her luck and slink upstairs or through the kitchen, and went through a phase of flying up the stairs and jumping on the bed at 3am - just because, and EVERYTHING is done with 10 times more enthusiasm than necessary, but she will never have the mentality to being a working dog! Both great with people, other dogs, and kids, don't mind being dragged by the collar and having an abundance of toys on them! However this said, they're 10 times better behaved for my dad!
