Hi all, my Lab puppy is 10 weeks old. He came half house trained, with this I mean he hasn't done poo in the house since i brought him home 3 weeks ago, he always goes out for it and when I see him doing it I praise him to encourage him to keep doing it outside, however, at the beginning even he was going out for his wee and I've been constantly taking him out and praising when he does outside, he even understands when I say 'let's have a wee wee'. Recently I've been finding accidents and he's not thinking to go out for it anymore, unless I take him out, which I do almost every 30min, he does it inside.
Where am I going wrong?? Or is this normal and in time he will start going outside by himself??

Thanks soo much you guys for assistance!

It's been when back turned or we aren't around. Although there have been occasions where he's been playing with OH, stops and wee, so perhaps that is more in front of us, almost like he forgets he needs to go out. If we notice in time we shout his name which makes him stop, take him outside and when he does it or finish what started I reward him. But if we don't know when he did it, then just clean it.
I'm taking him often enough but there may b that second too late.
OH told me last night looks like he was on his way out, stopped for a drink and then decided to go there, almost like he forgot and got distracted by water.
If I continue taking him constantly, it will become his own routine and he will go by himself with less accidents, wouldn't it??

Have you had him checked for infection? From what you have out it sounds as though he can't control his bladder to wait, so maybe get him vet checked for cystitis or similar?

Query a UTI and stop shouting at him - he may be doing it secretly as he feels pressure from you when 'caught in the act' - he won't see it as intervention, he will see it as pressure.
Especially don't shout his name, it will make no sense to him why you are shouting his name - just try and get him outside quickly and silently.
Observe his intake of water and watch for things like circling/sniffing - it's usually quite easy to see when a dog is thinking of going to the toilet.

Thanks CC, for wee he doesn't circle or sniff, is like comes to him that has to go and does it, but normally I'm taking him out so often that out of 10 times he goes, probably 1 is an accident.

Will stop shouting and picking him up and take him out

I'll take him to vets next week, but I think is training more than illness!

Thanks so much

Yep, if you think about it, if you have an overwhelming urge to go and you drop yer keks, if someone caught you in the act and said CAS!!! you would be mortified and slink off make sure you never got caught again. If someone rushed you to the loo and went, yay, you made it, you'd feel a lot better. Basic and not very scientific I know!!!

If you do need a urine sample keep an old plastic takeaway container with a lid, so you can take it with you, rather than getting a sample bottle and have to wait around forever at the surgery, where of course, he won't go :p

You could keep an eye on when he is drinking and the volume, as this is bound to have an impact, some dogs 'silly drink' - two of mine have, they just stand at a bowl or in a river and drink and drink and drink, doesn't mean they are thirsty. Just waterbabies!!!

Having said all that he is still very young so don't worry overly. Mine was still having accidents in the house cause his ma was a berk with her nose stuck in the computer :p up until about eight months.

Okedokey, I'll rush him out if I see him attempting.

Keep my trips ever 30 to 45min.

I praise him with a bit of sausage or ham or cheese, sth that he doesn't get for anyth else, is this OK or shall I change the reward?

I must admit that it has never crossed my mind to give food treats while praising a puppy for doing their business outdoors, I've only used voice praise and they've all gotten housebroken sooner or later.

My best advise is actually to relax and simply try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, e.g. on the weekend, put up a puppy pen outdoors and bring a book or laptop etc. with you outdoors, but whatever you do, don't stress about it, housebreaking will take the time it takes, some puppies learns it quickly, some needs more time, so you might as well relax about it. Besides, I really think that they pick up on our unconscious signals, so hypothetically, if you unconsciously worry about getting your puppy housebroken, they can sense your worry, but they don't understand why you're worried, only that it is somehow related to going to the toilet, which as CaveCanem mentioned, makes it more likely that they'll try to do it when you're not looking.
If you instead are relaxed about it, and just tells yourself that accidents happen, but sooner or later they'll be housebroken, then the puppy is more likely to also feel relaxed, they'll be less likely to try and hide their accidents, which gives you a better chance at noticing when you need to take your puppy outdoors...

Good luck, be patient and check with the veterinarian so that he doesn't have an UTI.
