Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions?

We have only had Barnes since saturday so maybe its part of an adjustment thing but he never asks to go out to relieve himself.

Every time I see him looking for a spot to pee or poo in the house I distract him and then take him outside. I wait with him and then praise him for doing whatever he needs outside.

Last night I took him out last thing and he did the necessary but by this morning he had done two poos. I hadn't heard a peep out of him and I had been down once to let him out as I don't expect him to hold it all night.

Also although he pees on the paper provided he always poos on the floor????

If any one had any suggestions that might help me encourage him to do the right thing I'd appreciate it!!!

For info hes a 4 month old JRT.

The important thing is to establish a routine - so out last thing at night - around 11.00 and up early - by 6.00 and out again. You could also withdraw water from around 7.00pm and no food after 5.00pm.

Pop him out every hour for the first week or so in the day, and go from there.

That is absolutely the right thing, you watch them when you are with them, when he's eaten, drunk, slept and circling sniffing around, catch him at it and take him outside then praise. It's early days yet so he won't associate it for another three or four times, then he'll click.

You just have to clear up the other ones and ignore, happily the pees are not all over the place!

Never rub their noses in any of it, that doesn't make sense. If you catch him in the act of pooping or peeing you could shock him a bit and hustle him outside roughly, then if he finishes out there BINGO big praise!

You know, a really great help is a cage, make him a really comfy bed in it, feed him a dinner or two in there, dogs like them and he will restrain himself from soiling in the bed, but you have to only lock him in there when its absolutely the last thing at night and get up early say, around 6 to get him out for the first few weeks as he has a teeny tiny bladder.

Mine love it in the cage. I only leave them up to 5 hours in the day in it. But at night, up to 9 hours. They just conk out.

Thank you both. Its good to know that I appear to be on the right track.

I have though about an indoor pen, so I think I may investigate that one further.

Amymay would it be ok to remove his water at around that time?

I've heard that its okay to remove water after about 7pm. In the wild they have to go days without water, it won't hurt him. And no feed after 5 is fine too. He should pass out in the night as its dark and quiet, and he's worn out from the day!
