I've noticed that household fly spray has Tetramethrin and Permethrin in it. I can't find anything online that suggests these two chemicals are toxic or carcinogenic for equines.

That being said, what do people think about them being used in this form for treating feather mites?

Permethrin is in alot of horse fly sprays, Tetamethrin is used in hygiene sprays (like the fly spray) and in agriculture but is a skin irritant and isn't approved or recommended to be used for horses, livestock or humans. I'd also be worried about all the other chemicals in the spray - horse fly sprays are designed to repel, whereas household fly sprays are designed to kill. Not really something you want to be putting on a horses skin (where it will be absorbed into the bloodstream).

Have you considered Deosect? Only needs to be applied every week or two and some people on here swear by it for repelling flies!

If you are having trouble with feather mites I would recommend 2 Dectomax injections 10-14 days apart. Mites burrow under the skin so applying anything topically will only work very short term. By having the injection you kill them from within, with the repeat injection killing off any newly hatched eggs :)

I really wouldnt! I use Dectomax injections, deosect and then neem oil. Mine doesnt have mites anymore, but he does have loads of dry skin and damage from previously untreated mites. I am fed up of trying to deal with it through all the hair, so mines now getting clipped out so I can see whats going on and hopefully keep on top of it

Mine sadly seems to be immune to dectomax this year. Vet has said to try flea spray for dogs.

He'll need sedating to have his feathers off but I think that's the route we're heading.
