Dear diary
My name is Hovis, I am 6 years old and I like drinking beer.
It’s all mums fault, she took me to that pub place last weekend and I’ve found out how nice the stuff they drink there is. Last Sunday fit mare, nutty Alf, poof bags, wise Monty, Looney legs, mature-but-fit Fi, scary mare and I rode out of the yard together which was VERY exciting. I’ve never been out in a group that big before. I did get so excited I jogged a bit but mum shouted at me so I stopped. We rode for a long way which was fine except nutty Alf did the whole thing sideways. He freaks me out to be honest, he looks loads like poof bags but he’s all white where poof bags is all dark. And he’s MENTAL! I don’t think mum likes him too much either so we tried to keep of his way.
Then finally we arrived at this house which had loads of seats outside and we rode across this funny stone stuff which made a really loud noise when you stood on it. Poof bags and co were having a duck fit over it but I thought it was kind of cool. Then mum and all the other people got off and took us into this garden place where they let us eat the grass! All these other people arrived and were cuddling me and saying how handsome I was – ha! They didn’t say anything to poof bags so he was most put out. Mum and Dad and the others then all had a drink of this nice smelling stuff in big glasses. When mum wasn’t looking I stuck my nose in her glass and YUM I like that stuff! Mum said I wasn’t allowed anymore as I was underage – why do you have to be old to drink nice things? It’s so unfair.
Then after mum and everyone had eaten some funny smelling bread things we mounted up and rode all the way home. It was good fun! Mum said I was brilliant apart from the point near to home when Alf ran past me and I thought “what the heck” and ran after him. Apparently mum hauling on my bit and shouting things like “whoa you big fat person-of-unknown-parentage” meant she wanted me to stop. I wish she’d be clearer on these things.
Mum let me have the day off on Monday which was nice of her until I realised she wanted to give me a bath. She used this stuff called fairy which has really ruined my cred on the yard. Seriously is the woman hell bent on having people thinking I prefer poof bags to fit mare? I am NOT a fairy. Why can’t I have shampoo called – macho man or something? Anyway I give mum her due she’s got my feathers very clean.
Apparently all this bathing and mane tidying is because we’re going “showing” on Sunday. What’s “showing”? It sounds a bit poncy to be honest and I am getting a little worried. Last night Aunty Laura plaited my tail to show mum and I looked a right idiot! Mum says we have to trot round whilst some person decides who’s the best looking. Old Timmy said it sounds like mums taking me to a beauty pageant and I will also have to show a “talent”. I’m not sure I’ve got one of those so how do I show it? The only thing I can think of is showing how to eat a lickit in under 3 minutes – will that do?
Any other ideas?
Anyway I have to go soon – HE is coming later so I’m going to find a tree to try to hide before mum can find me. I do not wanted to be beasted by commando bossy boots today, I’m still traumatised by the tail plaiting.
Right, I’m off….. I wonder if I lie down really flat in the field mum might think I’m too exhausted to be worked? Hum………..

Bless Hovis, im so glad you enjoyed your ride to the pub the other day!! Im sure in time your mum will let you try some more bear but she is right, you are under age at the min. Dont worry too much old Timmy is very wrong about showing being like a beauty pageant, but it is your chance to really show off and make every one look at you! Hope you have fun at the show and please make your mum proude!!

LOL Hovis you do make me giggle

Hi Hovis

Your diary this week is awesome! I love it when Mum takes me out with lots of others but I don't think I've ever been to a pub thing? I wish I could go...
I do know what you mean about beer tho - at Christmas Mum lets me & 3 of my friends have some of this black stuff - I don't know what it's called cos I can't read - but she says I can't have a full can to myself as I'm not old enough (she confuses me, 'can' I or 'can't' I?!)...
Anyway, I think this showing lark is somewhere you can go to show off - make sure you show them all your moves and swish your tail - I love swishing my tail & showing off in the field!
I hope you don't get beasted by the nasty army man - I wouldn't bother laying flat out, I've tried it & it doesn't work - maybe you could just hide behind a tree or another horse so your Mum thinks you've gone out?!

Have a good weekend anyway

Excellent diary Hovis!

If you promise to be a good boy for Mum on Sunday when you do this showing thing, I know she'll be really pleased with you - and she might just be persuaded to take you to the pub place again!

So, good luck with the showing thing and please let us know how you get on.

Mr Hovis,
Beauty pageants are great, where else do you get dozens of fit mares all standing in a line trying to get a trophy? -Just think about it!!!!

Hovis,
Lying down doesn't work, I tried this and mum just dragged me up. I showed her how grumpy I was with her by biting the soft lumpy bit that sticks out in front of her chest. She yelped like Poof Bags would if he ever got into a fight and I got a smack. I then felt guilty so tried to give her kisses but she was having none of it so I had to extra good in my lesson to show how sorry I was.

The only way you can get out of work is to limp a bit when she comes to find you. It's worked for me for 3 months now, but I realised it backfired on me when mum took Monty out to play instead last weekend. He came back staying he'd got to splash in the water and jump holes in the ground and things, my favourite, and I was stuck at home, bored in the field. He said he got lots of apples for it as well and I only got one as mum says I'm getting fat with no work. It's not fair. I never win.
Good luck with practising the limp,
Archie

dear hovis,
i too have an army man who comes to give my mam lessons, he is very strict, and doesnt let me get away with anything

, sometimes he even rides me

which means i have to do as im told, i have tried lots of different things to get out of lessons with him, even lying down when i have my saddle on but the only thing that has worked is limping on the way to the arena, this means you get lots of fuss and all your tack comes off and you get to go back in the field with your mates

Oh Hovis thank you for your words. It is always good to read up on your day to day goings on. I hope the army man did nto work you tooooooo hard. Good luck for the show on Sunday. I look forward to reading all about it as soon as you have recovered.

Wotcha Hovis

Auntie Naturally was telling me about your show and how she'd gone back to the shire horse man to ask some more about ridden showing. She seemed a bit stressed about canter to be honest - says you'll have to do it and she was wrong, and she doesn't think your mum will ever forgive her for talking rubbish.

I don't know why she is stressing, I used to love showing the judge how fast I can go, and think you will enjoy it too. A little tip, motorbiking the corners and trying to knock out the rest of the line up is fun, but you will get whinged at about it. And to be honest, Dollydolls is right about there being loads of fit mares there to strut your stuff in front of. Phwoar!

Bowl 'em over with your moves! Just remember to appear sorry afterwards and send the judge a get well soon card.

Frankie

Keep telling you Hovis. Bad Back!!! Tell your mum that your saddle hasn't fitted for ages and you now have the bad back. Not only will this get you out of work for a bit but you will give your mum a huge guilt trip as well.
