As some of you might remember, my horse is currently self trimming due to having pedal osteitis and a bone spur in his coffin joint on the front right hoof!

he has spent the last year with remedial shoeing and ended up 6/10th lame due to raised heel shoes this year. Vet asked me to try self trimming in Sept and so far we've not looked back.

So wonder what everyone thinks of his hoofs! you can see lots of rings where his hoof is clearly changing shape.

Lovely!

They are rebalancing from side to side and just look how fast those heels are growing - you can tell from the way the rings dip down at the back.

Is he a lot sounder?

Oh yay thanks for saying that. We spent a year trying to raise his heels with corrective shoeing, so it's good to hear that it's now working ;)

He's not lame now, went out for 4.5 miles today, which has worn them down loads and he was fine during it. He was a bit sensitive on a few stones but nothing major at all. Sooo chuffed

Sometimes human intervention males things much much worse and the best thing to do is to let the horse sort itself out.

Good on you for taking the leap into barefoot after spending so much on shoeing! And no I don't mean the barefoot doo-da-ey cost a fortune for a trim special way of barefoot I do literally just mean shoeless!

Absolutely flipping brilliant :) oh yes, his heels are definitely growing!

My latest rehab protege is sound after five weeks too. He was going increasingly lame in bar shoes. The farrier said his heels would never cope. More worryingly, the trimmer of her other horse also said the shoes should be left on. I went to see him and told my friend I thought he'd do it easily if she worked hard, and she's been a right trooper! In all this rain she didn't miss a days walking, and her reward is a sound horse well on his way to hunting barefoot late this season or early next.

Oh wow that's quite an achievement, if they both thought he still needed shoes! Luckily my farrier was very supportive of removing his shoes :)

I was the same at the beginning, loads of walking every day but its got harder since its been dark! but his feet seem to be holding up quite well!
I can't wait to start getting out and about with him this spring/summer! its been a long time coming for us both, but he's a much happier boy now!

Also, I can't wait for my vet to see him at the end of the month, as he's not seen him since we removed them, he's going to be so pleased.

They look good. The proof of the pudding, is the sound horse you hacked for 4.5 miles.

Also we've not gone that far in the last year, even with shoes on.

I moved him to his current yard in Nov 14 whilst he was on box rest! we had some time of riding but I never made it as far as this, which actually included riding through his old yard, where my mare and mini still live! so really pleased we made it today! he still remembered it too! he kept looking back after we passed my mare, who refused to leave the field shelter to say hi! haha

Please excuse me hijacking your thread Kezzabell and my ignorance but I have a question about walking once the shoes come off. Do you mean walking in hand to start with and over a variety of surfaces? Front shoes are hopefully coming off next week and I want to try to get things right for it to be successful :)

Yeh thats right, to start with a nice flat, non stoney surface is nicer but my yard has lists of stones, so we couldn't avoid them, the 2nd week was when he showed the most tenderness on stones but after a week or two he was walking more comfortably on them

He still feels bit stones but very infrequently now :)

The angles of his foot in the shod pic makes me feel ill!

Me too! Massive improvement, well done OP!

its scary to think that I actually thought he had nice feet before! He needed to have a short toe because the angle of this coffin bone was wrong but now seeing the difference it makes me realise how short they were before! I didn't realise until I compared the two pics!!
