How are people rugging?!

Frost? It was ten degrees up here on a hilltop at nine this morning.

Mine are both thin skinned and naked, but it's been 17 up here today. Crazy weather.

Yep, hard frost and -4 here this morning. Was up to double figures by 11 though

Unrugged and out naked 24/7. Fully clipped too, I'm cruel apparently but horse is very hot and doesn't like being rugged, she sweats under a sheet so I've given up. Shes happier naked and filthy

Rose (clipped) and Millie (unclipped polo pony) are both out naked, I do rug Rose when she comes in at night but not Millie. I've been popping Rose's rug on when I go out to check before bedtime as our stables are both just across the yard and also quite warm. This weather is gorgeous, clear blue sky warm and very still, perks me up no end! However I have just got them both in and Millie is covered in big lumps (she's a chestnut roan) and Rose has quite a few smaller lumps, bloody flies in february!!!

Mine are both clipped and are naked during the day, the rugs come off at breakfast in the morning and go back on about 6-7 in the evening, I would rather they had an hour a bit chilly than boil all day saw plenty of horses out in full neck rugs today which is just crazy.

Unrugged mine the week before last as I didn’t want to get into the rugs on rugs off situation. They’re both unclipped and like yaks. They have been out 24/7 since the weekend as I have broken my finger and can’t drive.

My highland is fully clipped and is now out 24/7. Mw on at 6pm, swap it to lw at 6am and then naked from 9am til 6pm. Im lucky that he is kept 200 yards from where I work so I nip over the fence on my way in to strip him off!!

My clipped horse is out naked 7am-6pm then just a sheet at night as in. It’s below 0 till about 10am but he would be miserable rugged by 11am.
My poor 2yr old is absolutely dripping in the day currently. He is full of baby fluff and really feeling the heat. He isn’t rugged at all but he is sooo hot 🥵

The two I have lightweights on one is very old and poorly the other had a soapy bath so is building the grease back up at the minute A few days and it will be off again

Mine are unruffled during the day and in 200 gram at night both fully clipped out .We had a hard frost last night but warm by 9am

Here too. I've got my whole rug collection at the yard right now. Not brave enough to bring the heavier ones home because that would guarantee arctic conditions!

Poor M is trying very hard to get rid of his double coat. Hot itchy Ardennes.

The car had to be de-iced by me at 8am this morning, by 10am it was about 12 degrees. Bobbie is dealer clipped and its not grown back. Shes out naked as soon as the grass defrosts then in a thin stable rug, about 80gms I think, when shes in overnight.

I cant believe any one is rugging in the daytime. Its been up to 16 degrees today around midday!

Frost this morning, still on the ground at 11 am where the sun hadn't reached. Left the 50g rugs on then at 3 pm they where too hot so took them off for a couple of hours. The amazing thing was that no-one rolled in that time, I put the 50g rugs back on after 5 pm and two rolled within 10 minutes.

Mine is at livery and I only go up every other day so she wears the same rug 24/7. It’s currently her 0g rain sheet with neck. She has sweet itch so she can’t go naked as there are swarms of midges about already. Also it’s too muddy for the sweet itch rug yet, at least the rain sheet doesn’t soak it up. She may be chilly overnight but I doubt it as she has too much natural insulation.

May I ask what is the temperature in UK right now that you can take blankets off in the day? I am in Poland, and trying to figure out when the rug should come off. At present I spend my whole day looking at the weather on the phone, and today I have been twice to check, asked a friend at the yard to check and just rang the groom at the yard to take a look to see if she is the right temperature. Frankly I am baffled by the whole thing now, and getting completely neurotic about it! I had ponies as a child, and as I recall they had a new zealand rug for outside, a jute rug for inside and a blanket to go under these if it was super cold. Now I find myself with a 500g, 350g, 300g, 200g, 100g, polar lined, unlined and I still never seem to have a blanket that seems to be the right one for more than about 3 hours! It is cold here, but can feel momentarily warm when the sun comes out. Problem is that 10 minutes later sun can go in and it can be windy - suddenly 0 degrees feels like -6. If anyone has a good plan I would love to hear it! We go from +9c to -6c in 24 hours, so apart from moving into the yard with a sleeping bag I am lost! Mine is not clipped, but very fine coat and not a good do-er.

I was off work all last week so this lovely weather was fine, this morning however I was back to work so turned out early. There was a decent frost and ice on my windscreen and gates.
So I took neck covers off but left rugs on. Just got home an hour ago to pull them off and one in particular was dripping but all too hot.
I can find lighter rugs and suppose it’s not for long they will be cold but it’s a bit of a pita!
Little ex racer was miserable ☹️ I’m not sure I have anything thinner than the 100g he was in to fit but equally he has no coat for t/o naked when temps are low seems harsh!

I find the canvas type of sweetitch rugs cover this scenario quite well for clipped horses / thin coats. The Rambo / Shire / PE sweetich rugs, are thick enough canvas to provide some insulation and warmth, and yet white so reflect the sun and keep cooler than naked in sun. Mine are also fairly rain resistant / fast drying. Mine dont live out at the moment, but worked well when I had clipped horses living out in spring.

Some parts of the UK had record highs of 20 degrees celcuis today! Record February temperatures.

Naked in the day for them to enjoy the sun and some mutual grooming. I went up this evening and he was sweating under his light weight rain sheet the girls has put on him for overnight. He has a good groom and I popped it back on for the chill tonight. But they are still warm at 6pm - and he's fully clipped out.

Ditto, it was between -2 and 0 when I turned out this morning. TB went out in a no fill rug because I figured it would be warm enough in an hour or twos time. I would rather she was a little chilly for 2 hours rather than too hot for 9 hours.

It's been ridiculously warm for Feb in the UK. Usually we have snow and sleet around now.

My 100g rug is my go-to for odd weather like you're describing. It keeps the wind off with a decent amount of fill for the poor doers

Just take it off in the morning and put it back on in the evening?
This! It really won't kill them to be a bit on the cooler side for an hour or two until it warms up. They can move around and graze to keep warm, but not much they can do if they're too hot! My oldie is wearing her m/w overnight as she was looking a bit stiff (she was wearing her l/w) but she has it off in the morning even if it is a bit chilly first thing. The other one never wears a rug.

Last week took my old arabs rug off during the day and she was cold when I got home from work at 7. Now hw overnight and 100g during the day. When I was home at the weekend it was naked 10 - 4. It’s really tricky I’d rather she was naked.
