My 3yr old welsh D is starting to put some weight on now after his little ordeal a few months back (big op under aesthetic to remove an undescended testicle from abdomen) . He's slowly picking up and his summer coat is starting to come through at long last!
Hoping he will plump out in time for an inhand class i have planned for him in June, will be his first outing :) Not backing though yet, he's really not looking mature enough so i will leave him till next spring as a 4yr old as he still has growing and filling to do. He will probably do some long-reining over the summer and a few outings but thats his lot :D

How are your 3yr olds and what are your plans for them this year?

I have a cow horse. He stands in the field and eats grass with a herd of other 2 and 3yo's. He will do that. He likes his grass.

We need to get some more pics of the little Fleabag as he's growing so much at the moment. He may go to an in hand show or two this year but that will be it - he's still very immature.

Mine, is big, so very big, hes slowly working towards being backed but he was only 3 on Monday! heres some pics

he was supposed to make 15'2 fully grown by he's the bay next to my 28yr old 15'2 mare, both of the same breed :)

My gorgeous little girl has been on on the road this week, she did amazing nothing phased her. She is looking a little babyish though still a little fluffy and needs filling out, I think it will be next year she will turn into a swan :)

Judging by the way my 3yo tanks round the field he seems to think he's running in the Derby next month even though he's only 10.3hh  What he will actually be doing is 2 or 3 in hand shows later in the summer :)

My gelding is three, but I was asked if he was a yearling recently. Yes, he still has long, long legs and a short back. So lots of growing to go still.

He has however got his brain in gear and actually remembers stuff now without being reminded 100 times. :) He loves his bitless bridle, so it's lovely to have him both happy and easy to control. We met our first moped, cyclist and loose dog last week. He was a bit worried, but walked past all three (the moped rider kindly turned off their engine as we were on a narrow lane with no passing place nearby to move over into).

He just does in-hand stuff two or three times a week and then is out in the paddock with his friends the rest of the time. He is overflowing with enthusiasm at the moment which is nice. If I go in the field with a headcollar, he is first over and is pretty much shouting 'pick me, pick MEEEEEEE!' Sadly this has coincided with the grey going through one of her cowbag to catch fazes.

You can't win them all. *sigh*

Mine is 3 at the end of june, does he count ? He is in the field with Uncle Jack after having been in soo much over the winter. He coped really well but is only 15.2 and is TBxWB and very slight so he will stay doing very little except usual stuff, farrier, dentist and watching the grown up horses work until next spring when he will go to a fabulous guy who will show him the ropes before coming home and lightly hacking and discovering the world.... lucky ******:D

Mine was 3 the other day. He's looking quite filled out but is still very babyish. Il just be taking him out in hand on the bridle paths and doing some ground work this summer, then il lightly back him towards the end of the year and turn him away until the spring.

Swallow was 3 on 5th may i will probably do alot this year long reining and such but don't really want to back her til next year i think she's probably ready but don't want to rush it.

here she is :)

Ours is busy expanding his waistline  Will be picking up where I left off in the autumn, with some light long-lining and leading him out off my other horse. Maybe take him to a show or two later in the year and possibly back him.

He loves going out-my left arm is at risk of being stretched as my tb refuses to walk as fast.:D

When my youngsters were 3 they did spend most of the time turned out on the track, but they had learned to lead, tie up, have hooves trimmed, wear a rug, go on a float, respond to steady pressure, and rhythmic pressure (in all directions, sideways, forward, back, up and down!), go on walks on a loose line, investigate scary things, and be touched everywhere....so as a 3 year old these were revision lessons together with standing by the mounting block while I moved her around as required, leant over her and played 'silly idiots'!!! We also started lateral flexion......string, then sircingle around tummy in gradually increasing tightness.....rein over neck, around hq and feel for a turn to face me.....

Mine still counts...just he is 4 in june but has some catching up to do. Recovering from an operation two weeks ago, just trying to keep a lid on him till he can be turned out again this weekend (fingers crossed!!) then its all about getting him stronger and putting on condition

He had a permanent tracheotomy and is feeling loads better for it! You can see it in this picture

My wee one will be three at the end of june. Only plan is to do some long reining and get her used to having a light saddle on. Possibly a light lunge.

She is nowhere near ready for backing this year, she's still got lots of growing to do (at least I bloomin' well hope so!)

the horses on this thread so far are WAY more mature than mine!

Piper is 3 at the end of May. He is long reining now - badly! I need help now as yesterday it was very windy and it was bin day and OH was top dressing and if in doubt about anything he stands still. Which, at over 17hh is better than leaping on me, but I find it hard to get him going again. In hand he does 'walk on', 'woah' and 'trot' but when I drop back it goes a bit pear shaped. TheresaW, if you read this post, when are you coming to visit!?

He wears a bridle and saddle and I hope to lightly back him in July.

Mine is coming up to four now. I backed her, just sat on had a little walk around and then decided to leave her for a bit as the harsh winter did her no favours. She's looking so much better recently and appears to have grown some too so when she officially turns four I'll bring her back into work gently and we will hopefully be riding away by the end of the summer. I'm very excited. I've owned her since 10 months old so waited a long time for this!

My 3yo Dutch Warmblood/TB cross is doing nothing but growing and eating. She's about 15.2 at the moment and will only finish about 16 hands which was the plan. You can do anything you need to do with her. Very easy to handle. She had a loose jump the other day. Nothing huge. Just to see what she thinks. I don't do chasing so she gets caught and walks to the top of the chute. She's quite exciting. Beautifully balanced and great canter. She's dark bay with a blaze and one hind sock. She will do about 4 weeks in June. She balloons on grass and this will bring her forward mentally and physically. Then off til Autumn and then see where she's at. I have "backed" all my babies since birth. No weigt ever on their backs but they know what a swung leg over is and me in their vision. Note this is when they are laying down obviously. She will be a diamond. Love my Cupcake!

Don't panic! Our fleabag is very much still an immature little weed. This is him the other month:

As I say, I do need to get some more pics of him as he's a lot less hairy now and is just starting to bloom, but he still looks like a yearling from a distance and then you stand next to him....

Daemon is 3 and 5 months - he's been quietly backed and laid off till next winter under saddle. He's now just doing a bit of long reining - he is lovely to do, really smart and easy to work.
