How are your horses rugged for the Winter months?

Clipped or non clipped. Living in our out.

My 2 TB's have a full clip with turnout for approx 3/4 hours a day so in the stable they both have a Rhino Stable Plus H/W with a 100G rug liner underneath.
As for turnout they both have Rhino Wug Plus H/W once again with a 100G liner underneath. Can't rug them up too much because they work up a head of steam playing in the field!

As for Gem the native who keeps his fuzzy coat, it's a Rhino Pony Wug M/W half neck when turned out and a Shires Ponywarma M/W in the stable. Bless him he's so economical to keep :o

I'm interested as in what you guys rug yours up in, and how many layers.
 
My mare is a 14.1 cob.
She is normally clipped (varies between chaser/trace and full)
She will wear a rain sheet to keep her dry, if it gets very cold she has a 100 and 200, Im planning to just use the 100g if it gets very cold this year.
She lives out, although when she has been in overnight she wore a rhino medium 200g stable rug :)
 
Will just do the two that I have with me currently.

Saffron: Welsh Cob, 18 years old. Lives out 24/7, usually has a bib clip, but may go for a chaser clip this year as expect her to be doing more work. Has a fairly long, but very flat winter coat. She has 2 rugs currently; a no fill rainsheet and a M/W Mark Todd which I love, fits her beautifully and she feels nice and snug, but not hot in. Works for us so far.

Misty: New Forest Pony, 23 years old. Lives out 24/7, probably will have a bib clip as has a very thick fluffy coat as will still be hacking out at weekends in winter, can't stand her getting boiled when she's working. She also has poor teeth, I take that into account as I'm a great believer of hay keeping them warm when they're digesting it. Mist has a no-fill rainsheet, a M/W Loveson I think, and new last year a H/W Fal Chieftain as our new place doesn't have any shelters. Was very pleased I bought it when we had those -15 degrees nights a few days after it arrived!!
 
Retired 25 year old mare will be rugged/layered according to weather conditions and will winter out. 2 youngsters not rugged and will winter out. 6 year old hippo will only get a rain sheet in extreme weather/if Im riding next day and will winter out :)

None are clipped/fed. Will just get ad lib hay. Elderly mare handfull of chaff for bute to be given.
 
14.1 Welsh Cob - Lives in or out 27/7 depending on the yard. It doesn't bother me, I don't worry about him being out at all. During the day (only if it's raining) he has a rain sheet on, and at night a M/W rug with hood.
 
When my fully clipped cob is in overnight when it's cold he gets (depending on temperature) a sheet/fleece with a light/heavy tog duvet and then either a fleece/MW/HW no neck rug over the top.
For turnout he either has his MW with no neck, his MW with neck, his no-neck LW with either a fleece/MW/HW stable rug underneath or his HW with neck.

I am a huge fan of layering rather than one big, heavy rug :)
 
We live on the edge of the Cairngorms (minus 20 and 4 foot of snow not unusual).

So in winter horses are out in day in at night (in summer out 21 hrs out of 24, not 24x7 due to high grass sickness risk, they come in for 3 hours for a haynet which lowers the risks)

In winter Haflinger who was very overweight and now a little overweight and has had one lami episode is out unrugged always. She would get fat licking velcro. She is fed oat straw and soaked hay when in. Oat straw and chaff once soaking becomes impossible up here.

The 20 yo mostly retired IDxTB will have some kind of rug on unless its a really sunny day (esp if theres snow, he loves to have a good roll and wriggle in the snow). Neither are clipped so he is rugged less than if clipped. He has a rain sheet, a LW masta, a MW Rambo and a HW Fal - the last two with necks. He is fed Healthy Hooves, Horse and pony nuts and lo cal haylage as his teeth are ok and he is still quite a good doer.

All out, unless there is a very good reason for them not to be. Good reasons do not include snowstorms, monsoons or sub zero temperatures.

Nothing gets rugged until they start to look cold. I take absolutely no notice of the date or the temperature, the old arab will need a rug on at night by October when the frosts start, others may not have one until December, some may not need one at all.

I only possess MW turnouts. If a horse needs more I simply double up.
 
Well, clipped out fully, and rugged according to the weather. I have a newzealand rug, and put layers underneath depending on the cold. This country is manic with it's weather, so if its cold extra rugs go on, if it's milder they come off!!! It's a juggleing act. It would be such much easier if we had proper seasons. I have about 5 rugs for spirit,, and am in the process of getting rugs for Joey, shaunas new pony. He's a very light pony, and as posted earlier, I'm not happy with his condition, which is debatable on here, but everyone thats seen him in the flesh has commented on his lack of condition. So, it will be lots of rugs for him for the winter, and all the juggling for him too. Thank god, i have a friend that works for bucas, best of rugs for cost price. (well, everybody needs a bit of luck sometimes!!)

Depends how cold it is, how much work they're in (ref clipping), whether in/out, how fat they are! Everything from nothing + muzzle still (part native pony on knee high grass), to under-rug, duvet + turnout (TB!) in the same weather. In snow/cold rainy weather the ponies have muzzles off and that's it. My TB drops weight if she even sniffs the cold so has to have stupid amounts of insulation to keep her happy. Different breeds, different winter coats, different metabolisms!
 
My 19 year old tb usually gets her whole neck clipped off and then a trace clip on her belly and wears 300g mark Todd turnout the majority of the winter and is stables at night in around 200- 400g depending on temp and wears stable boots the whole winter.

My spotty welsh x usually has same clip as my fb but isn't as sensitive to the cold so he wears a 200g combo all winter apart from when minus when he will wear a 100g liner with it. He has a 200g combo stable and a 360g stable he wears depending on temp. This winter he will be getting a full clip though and wearing stable boots at night and a sniffy hood head in the field lol.

My exmoor had a bib clip and was naked all winter.

Lachlan I sincerely hope that you have a snow plough and don't dig that by hand :eek: I won't dig further than the drive shed to get to a plough! :D
 
i just clipped mine out at the weekend she was so fluffy - i have never known anything so fluffy in august!! so its all off :D shes got a 100g fill standard neck on overnight at the moment then in the depths of winter it can go right up to a sheet a lw and her mega heavy weight with neck- she lives out fully clipped all winter - last winter when she was in an american barn she had a medwight half neck and a medium weight full neck on and was roasty toasty:)
