how are your sweet itch sufferers getting on so far

Yes would agree with above, my SI mare had her foal on Friday night, she has been "naked" since last Thursday and there is a bit of tail rubbing, but not obsessive. She has 3 brick walls in her stable, should she really wish to rub herself raw... I would put this down to the vast quantities of Brewers Yeast I have been feeding her since before Christmas. Quite how I am going to get on re the rest of the summer remains to be seen, but so far so good, and weather wise it has been ridiculously hot down here...

Where do you buy your Brewer's Yeast?

My SI pony is worse than ever this year. We normally manage to stop him totally rubbing his tail raw until August, but he is raw even now.:(

A small amount of rubbing but nothing desperate and not every day. Started him on herbs around January time. He is now living out - with a rug at night.

I have been feeding - Rosehip and seaweed, brewers yeast, echinacea. I have also made a real effort to keep his stress levels down so removed one of the horses from the field that tends to chase n harass the ponies. :D

I get my Brewers Yeast from the feed merchant. 1kg or 3kg at a time, and have built up to giving her 1 heaped 60ml scoop per day. I can't see that starting it now would do any harm, although perhaps it might have been effective sooner if you'd started feeding it earlier. Its heavy in the B vitamins, which is basically what Cavalesse is, but that costs you about £90 per month from the vet.

You can get it cheaper from Charnwood Milling, but its a 20kg sack and that would take up precious space I haven't got and last me over a year...

Mine had started rubbing mane badly a few weeks ago. I had delayed putting him back in his Boett for as long as possible as he makes a fuss getting it on and off, but I have put him back in it now and he is fine. He goes from nearly pushing the stable over to no rubbing at all when his rug is on. Just wish it was easier to get on and off and when its time to get a new one they weren't so expensive!

Touchwood, mine is OK! Have decided to grow his mane this year! having hogged it previously.

He's having: Brewers yeast, 1 scoop twice daily plus linseed oil; also a scoop of seaweed. Unmollassed Dengie Hi Fi Lite & handful of unmollassed sugarbeet (dissolved in water for requisite time) in each feed.

He's also having the BioEos tablets once a week (available from national sweet itch website). Has a Rambo hoody on during the day and is out in quite an exposed field which he shares with sheep, so not too much grass or too rich, plus in at night when he wears an Amigo Mio rug in the stable.

If I ride him out, I wipe him over (not where saddle goes!) with pig oil and Neem oil mixed in together.

The only place where he is a bit itchy is around his eyes and face: he seems to be rubbing there a bit so I'm watching it. If it gets any worse then I'll bung him out in a flymask with ears, but am trying not to put it on too early.

So far so good ....... lets hope we get a nice summer with a nice breeze around to keep the little critchers away and not too much muggy hazy weather, yuck!

So far, so good. I have her on Cavalesse and have put her boett on and no rubbing as such, they also supply ointment, which I've put on the couple of places she has rubbed, amazing as she doesn't fight me. Have only tried this stuff this year at my vets advice as she really is bad and was thinking of having her put down. So going to see how things pan out this summer.

My YO started using a product called Z-itch a few weeks ago on a really bad sufferer, and the difference it's made has been amazing. And she has tried everything under the sun. Not one bite or scratch mark on him. :) It did cost about £30 tho.
