Got a spaniel staying for 24 hours, poss 48 hours. Just about mastering walks, pulls badly on lead and limited recall off. Will stay in bed when I'm about, after some odd 50 attempts to keep getting up and wandering about. ( my dog stays put as I don't like dogs all over the place at free will). When I can't be there, I close the door only to hear major scratching and jumping at the door, followed by loud whining!!
I've tried tying her, she cries louder... And I can't get her out the back door quick enough before she wees through excitement of seeing me!! I've also coupled her to my dog, but she drags her about too, mine is too soft. She doesn't scratch the door though!

I guess she will settle, but any ideas.?

are you likely to be having this dog stay again in the future?

if yes insist that the dog is correctly crate trained-it will make the dog much easier to have as a visitor. expecting a dog to stay on its bed in a strange environment is a lot to ask IMO, more so if the dog is used to roaming the house/or parts of it at will and most dogs are with the family if in the house so it may be very new to stay in one location.

not sure what to suggest this time round as without knowing the dogs history and routine at home I think it is very hard to advise in this situation

I would say this was very normal behaviour for a dog coming into a strange environment with strange people and a strange dog. I foster dogs, some settle very quickly others take a while, i keep to a pretty strict routine which my dogs understand and adhere to. I do like crate trained dogs because they settle quicker because they have their bed with them and its a comfort for them whilst they learn my routine. As Twiggy said perhaps next time this dog can be crate trained by the owner and bring their crate.
