Def' agree about horses being in your blood!! Even though i was away from horses for quite a while i never forgot the times when i was younger and horse obsessed!! I would now never be without horsey contact again, even if it was just looking after retired horses.

The longest break from riding I've had is 4 weeks- when I broke my collar bone- but obviously still saw my horsey lots

Everyone always talks about "the fear" setting in when you're older.... well I'm glad I'm still young and I wouldn't say I'm fearless but there isn't much I wouldn't sit on!!

All joking aside i think the 'fear' that some of us older riders talk about (im 35) is down to all the other commitments we have..i.e kids, work, paying the mortgage etc which are difficult to manage if you are on crutches!! Im not scared of my horse or riding in general but am aware of the dangers. there is nothing wrong in having a sense of your own mortality...so long as it dosent prevent you doing what you love doing. Also a fearless young rider dosent mean they are good riders...it just means they have no fear

About 27 years. I gave up before going to college and got a horse on loan at 45. I always said once we had enough land to have one then I would get one. I did an NC in horse care and got a horse on loan through that. I also got 2 shetlands to keep her company and ended up owning all 3 before the end of the year. OH has now started riding and I bought another horse with a friend.

I lost my confidence on a complete sh*t of a pony and didn't ride for a year.. I only got back to doing it as I really missed riding and my mum was DC of my pony club andI hated going to rallies and missing out! cue naughty pony coming out of field and me finding the joys of hunting and schooling whips!

That must have been very difficult with your mum so heavily involved in the horsey world!! Glad you got your confidence back though...it must be a addiction!!

I had to sell my horse earlier this year, so a break of just over 3 months so far but i can see it being a while longer :-( Went for a lesson last week at a riding school as I miss horses too much and am piling on the pounds not riding or doing yard work every day!

About 10 years. Normal reasons boys, going out, no money, marriage, children, Then OH bought me one for my ?? (secret) birthday Haha. Had him 10 years and had to be pts after being retired due to a sacrialic injury. One month before he was retired OH bought a horse for himself we only rode together for a month. I decided not to get another. OH has had his 5 years now and has been told by docs not to ride anymore (back problem from being thrown off a horse we went to view). So guess who's had to take over Moi. Although he is 20 now and the grey in my siggi. He's brilliant but he now has a bit of arthritus in his hind hock so on Danilon.

I learnt to ride as a teenager, stopped riding when I left school (a group of us rode on a Monday afternoon as our compulsory PE in the 6th form) , rode a friends pony a couple of times in my early 20s. Daughter is 9 has been horse mad and riding since she was 4, other mums at the riding school are having lessons and saying I should, daughters instructor keeps saying I should....and I've finally booked a lesson next week, about 25 years since I last rode.

I bought my horsey 2 and a half weeks ago with a 20 year break...how are you getting on. Im taking things very slowly as my new horsey is a ex racer and im letting him chill out and giving us both time to get to know each other. he will be with me forever so i am not in a rush!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I took things very slowly to start with as we had a disaster when I was trying him out (I got so over excited that he didn't feel like a camel or something when I got on him!) I'm walking, trotting and cantering him now, circles and all!! I'm not in any rush with him either and we're still getting to know each other...

He's been trained as a showjumper so I've put off jumping him for now till I build up some riding muscle just in case he balloons his jumps, but I'm hoping to start jumping him soon, and maybe start doing Sportsman classes at shows (that start at 60cm!) I have jumped 1.20 but that was many many years ago!!
