How big a yard could one person manage solo?

A five box yard?
A ten box yard?
A fifteen box yard?
A twenty box yard?

Wood pellet bedding, but having to fill troughs by hand and poo pick paddocks.
 
as in, just to muck out, feed turn out etc? I have 13 equines on the premises, I generally don't poo pick, but ride 3-4 a day, teach and look after a flock of sheep, some cattle and so on.
I would imagine you could do 20 box yard in summer easily, in winter, when they are stabled more and it gets dark early, I think you would need part time help.
 
I manage an 8 box yard on full livery with riding or teaching twice daily. But it's a struggle to be honest. I love the rest I get in the summer, though this summer is the pits, with some of the horses having to come in rather than stay out 24/7.
 
i could do 8/10 daily

I have done 4 (muck out./waters/hay) in an hour (dosent include turnout tho!)


7 days a week though... id rather just do 1 :D

On your own,

A five box yard easily, full livery or whatever.
A ten box yard more difficult but manageable, especially for part/DIY with extras - perhaps with a spare box or two for clipping/storage etc.
15/20 boxes - only for DIY with extras, and then possibly wouldn't make enough money to live off..

I personally wouldn't want to have to muck out more than eight horses, as well as keeping yard tidy and the plae maintained...
 
When I worked on a hunting yard years ago, we did a 28 box yard of full liverys, about 12 of them including exercise and getting ready for hunting etc between two of us! We only got half a day off each week.

I guess it depends how hard you want to work! :)
 
I used to do 30 horses a day 20 stabled in winter and 10 out. I also had 10 to exercise and used to rotate turnout so 6 would go out perday. Luckily had maintenance for poo picking etc! Was hard and had no time off!
 
I've worked jobs that had far too many horses for one person too when I was younger, but wouldn't say it was the way forward! It can be done, but isn't ideal, and if you've got 15 horses to muck out and plait each day, its hard to cope with injuries etc (or days off for that matter!) If you add in the running of the yard, making billls, ordering feed/hay/straw etc I don't think its possible to have that many and do things well...

I was thinking about doing full livery at my yard last year, and came to the conclussion that 7/8 was the max I would do and still be able to have a life, do school runs, weed the flowers etc in the yard etc..

Agreed! Was not easy at all! No one on one time with horses and my only me time was if I got the chance to hack rather than school! Didn't like it and some of the horses got quite feral as they were not handled enough!

ATM I do 5 minis 5 ponies and 4 horses with help, a few more are coming soon but we can easily manage that!
 
I have done 6 in a day, all exercised but not turned out - so mucked them out twice. That was in the winter. Could possibly do up to 10 per day but many more than that alone would be a struggle especially in the winter, more in the summer would probably be ok if they are out.
 
i know someone who does competition livery and she has 9 horses :eek: the days that shes competing she does have someone else to do the exercising of the other lot - and she usually rides 3-5 horses at one competiton - normally eventing. every horse gets ridden every day
