i am really not good at working out youngster to adult sizing - but have found a v nice coloured filly, currently 14 months & aprox 14hh - her mother is a mw coloured cob - aprox 14 2 - father completely unknown [ mother was bought unknowingly pregnant from market] - any ideas on possible height at maturity - i need a horse to be 15.3/16hh - is she worth a punt?

No, I don't think she will make more than about 15.1 hh as at 14 months she will be around 93% of her adult height (on average).

Well it depends, I had a cob that was advertise as makeing 15hh when fully grown, his dad welsh sec d, his mum labeled as a vanner. And he was a beautiful heavyweight cob when he died aged 11years, but was 16hh.And I bought him as a yearling.

the old saying is what ever height they are at 12 months add 1 hand to 2 year old then another hand to maturity, so yes it could make the height, my boy at 12 months was 14.2, at 2 he's already 16.1! though he is a warmblood, my cob, was about 13.2 at 12 months and is now at 28 months about 14.2/3. I'm expecting him to make about 15.1.

All I'll say is if you have to have a horse of that height and it doesn't make it, be sure you are prepared to keep regardless or have the heart to sell. If you won't be able to do this, I would go for something where the parentage is known to give you more of an idea.

Wagtail think that maybe some what wrong, my warmblood was 13hh at 14 months at 27 months he is 15.2/3 ish, my other warmblood x was 13hh at 14 months stands at 15hh now. My little friesian was 12h at 12 months and is now 13.3h, my welsh sec d has grown from 12.3h to 13.3 in 4 months, my big friesian is 14.3 and 15 months she will make 16hh if not more. Measure the horses leg middle knee to cornet will give you adult height.

I stand corrected then! :) I guess you could always buy the yearling and then sell as a four year old if she doesn't make the height. Remember though that she is a filly whose mother is only 14.2. Is she a first foal?

first foals, second foals etc bear no relation to foals height, my warmblood mentioned above was out of my maiden 15.2 by at 16.1 stallion! At 2 he's already 16.1 and bum high again!

My understanding is that they are 90% height at 12 months old but I have never found that to be the case. Sorry can't be more help but I would reckon that she might come up short for you I'm afraid.

thank you for all yr responses, general consensus seems to be that she might make an ok height then, i am more than happy to sell on if she doesnt quite make what i want, but will back her & get her out & about first, so at least a 4 yr project then:)

Id guess at making around the 15.2 Mark.
Mines was 15hh at a year, is just over 2 now and is 16.1. Her sisters and brother all were smaller than her but again different breeding. I'm hoping she'll stop soon!
