Just been having a debate with my husband, he thinks he will make 15.3-16hh...... I think he will be above 16hh... what do you guys guess?

He was born 28th May 2010 so he is 2 yrs and 4 mths!

I measured him yesterday and he is 15.1 on the wither and 15.3 on his croup!

You could try the "string test", which I have done for years with foals on up. You measure from the elbow to the ergot (back of the fetlock), then turn the string so that the original end is still on the elbow but the other end (which was on the ergot) is now at or above the wither - this is approximately how tall your horse will be at maturity. It is surprisingly accurate!

Ahhh I shall have a go later, after I have convinced him I am not killing him ! hehe.... would you like to guess? I will give you a prize when he is 7 if you are right!! lol X

I am with your husband on this but that is based on my youngster which is 2 years and one day older than yours. She seems to have been 14.3 at the back for the last 2 years and about 14.2 at the front. I will now just be grateful if her front end ever catches up with her back end!

He's already fairly well grown for his age so prob not more than a coupe of inches. I'd guess about 16.2 ish. Bum won't go up massively more but front end will catch up. Most of his growing now willl be bulking out rather than height

Unlike Roo who's still ridiculously gangly and looks like he's made up of spare parts and is theefore got a fair bit still to go. He's 16.1hh already:eek:

DD I agree with you, he will be 16.1/16.2

Cortez, so that's how you do the string test...I read on here that you measure the leg from the knee to the coronary band, following the contours of the leg, I can't remember what the calculation was, but it made my foal maturing at 21 hands!

I would say 16 maybe 16.1hh.
I am trying to figure out how big my girlie will grow. She is 3 years 3 months but physically looks more like a 2 year old and she is currently 15.1hh in front and 15.2hh behind.

Right then!! I did the string test....... now here was my problem,he's round, so do i hold it straight up from his elbow towards his withers, if so he has another 6 inches to grow lol., making him 16.3 orrrr do I mould it around his flab..... cos if I held it on his skin, it met exactly on his wither!! Trust me to complicate it!!

You hold it straight up, and it helps to have something like a stick to hold out straight to make sure it's level, then you measure to that, if that makes sense? 16.3hh, ha! Gawd, I hope doesn't he get that big, you'll never get on! Or off!

I waited 3 days for you to tell me hes going to be 16.3 and a fat monster who I won't get on, remind me why I like you????? hehe..... XX

No, go do it again before you decide he'll be 16.3hh, and hold it STRAIGHT this time! It is actually very accurate (I did this on my 3 year old Friesian mare when she was 14.2hh at the wither and 15.2hh at the croup; decided it was rubbish because it said she'd be 14.2hh as she was obviously going to grow into that bum. Guess what? She's now 14 years old and 14.2hh).

My 2 year old is exactly the same height as yours both on the bum and withers. He was 2 in July, so slightly younger. He's clyde x cob and very well furnished! Chunky monkey! lol

I did the middle of the knee to the coronet band test which can out at 16", so 16hh really. I reckon he's heading to be on track for that. With this test, you hold the tape measure straight out from the knee...don't follow the contours of the leg. No wonder you ended up with a huge measurement! lol

Is he the one in the pics at the bottom of your posts?

Yes he is :-) gert lummox! If I followed the contours of his flab and wobbleness from his elbow to his wither, it said he wouldn't grow any more, but if I held it straight it was way higher... will try again more acurately. He's not allowed to grow bigger than 16hh as I am only 5 foot 3. My 6 foot 2 husband can go whistle lol X

Rowy.. you will be surprised how much some horses grow between the ages of 5 and 8.. 2 inches is very doable!! XX
