After reading a post the other day i'm aware that I clearly dont give my a shetland enough credit! I know they're sturdy but was seriously shocked that they can carry 10stone. Would it be terribly awful for me (5ft3 and weigh 9st) to ride a chunky shetland x who is 10hh a couple of times a week to keep him fit? I have a couple of kids who ride him off the leadrein for me but they dont ride if its raining as the indoor school isn't finished yet. All honest replys welcome

I think you'd be fine. I once read that they could carry 12 stone as they were used by shepherds in the Shetlands. Some of the kids who ride them in the Shetland Grand Nationals aren't that small, I think they have to stop when they are 14 so they aren't just for tiny kids.

Yes, I once read that they could carry 12 stone+ quite easily. I know a lady who is around 10 stone and she schools her small sons 10.2hh shetty x sec a twice a week, as the pony is a cheeky beggar!
