The Moose is 16.3hh, and i am 5 foot (and not very bendy or springy), and I ALWAYS use the mounting block, I couldn't get near her without it ! I love big horses, I rode Cazza's polocrosse pony a few months back and while he was a lovely sweet boy and and much less hassle than hacking the Moose, there just wasn't enough horse in front of me !

Im 5ft 2'', I used to get on a 17hh horse from the ground depending if I was feeling supple! If not I had a mountain block that was steps up to another yard.
Bear's 15hh and I can get on and off of him wherever and whenever I need too!

I'm 5'6 (I think...?) and my boy is 15.2hh but has no wither, therefore is actually quite big (if you catch my drift?). I can get on from the ground, and do so occassionally/once a year just to see if I still can, but otherwise I always use our bespoke hand made mounting block that my OH very kindly knocked up to mine and happybus' exacting standards

I'm 5'6", my horse is a big 15.3hh and although I can mount him from the ground which is useful if I've had to get off him for whatever reason during a hack and there is absolutely nothing about to use as a mounting block, in the 8 months I've had him I've only done that once as its so bad for their backs and unneccesary most of the time. Although I'm not heavy, I feel bad when I've done it, usually I always use a block or something similar, to make it easier for me and more comfortable for him!
When I was at a RS there was a girl in my lessons who was really tall and skinny and always mounted from the ground even when there was a block for everyone to use, I think she was showing off but at the time it made me feel so inadequate for using the block, but I was taught to always use it because of the horses' backs.

I think hurting the back thing depends on horse and rider. If you saw me getting on my chunky 15hh cob you wouldn't feel sorry for him, Im light (7 1/2 stone) and I get on light if you know what I mean, I hate seeing people get on their backs hard.

My main man is 15.3ish, and he is perfect. My mare is 16.2hh, and is perhaps just a little too big for me, length wise, she is very long and I have always struggled to get my leg underneath her. The gelding I have had all summer is 17.1hh, but I manage to get on with him better than my mare, perhaps because he is finer and very light. My old man is 17.2hh and he is FAR too big and too strong for me, which is one of the many reasons why he is retired!!

I am 5' 3" and ride a 14.1, 14.3, 15.3, 16.0 & 16.1 all of which I can get on easily, as I am quite flexible

... must admit the most difficult is the 15.3 as he is very wriggly at times ..

My preference is the 14.3 but then I am biased as he is my old chap ... and like putting on an old shoe

I have to use a mounting block, gate, fence or whatever I find for anything over 15hh. I'm 5'6".
Since I've had my 14.2, I've been loving it, because I know I can easily jump on and off when I please. I have problems with my hips, and really worry about damaging bigger horses backs because I can't mount quick enough from the ground!
That said, if I had to get back on a big horse from the ground, I'm sure I'd manage, I just wouldn't look very nimble

I have a 13.2hh and a 14.3hh (I don't ride the 13.2hh any more), I'm 5 foot 2 and a half

. I usually get on from a mounting block as I have joint problems and it's bad for the horses backs, however I can get on both from the ground. I also ride a 16.2hh and there's no way I could mount him from the floor.

I ride a 14.2 and a 16.2. I am 5ft 5 but the wrong side of 35 so always mount from a block or use the fence of the school.

I had to remount the 14.2 in the SJ arena a while back. I had landed well on my feet, but the grunt to get back in the saddle!! So I can do it should the need arise.

Pitty I didnt think about letting the stirrup down until too late.

QR 42 inches, 14.1hh and 14.3hh. I only ride the 42 inch shettie ATM so no probs mounting there

I did ride a big cobby thing at the trekking centre I worked at, think he was between 16 and 17 hh, had a fair bit of trouble getting on him especially as he walked off everytime I tried to get on!! Couldn't get off him on a ride!!!

My youngster (4 year old) is just over 16.3hh Imeasured her only yesterday!!! I sold my old horse, a 17.1hh ISH as he was too big, looks like Alee is goingt o be nearly that

.
George the horse that I have just started to ride is 17hh and he is lovely. I try to convince myself that I don't like riding big horses but there really is nothing like sitting on a strapping 17hh horse!!!!
I never mount from the floor (I probably couldn't if I tried!!!) if and when I go out hacking and need to get off I have to walk till I find a mound to mount from.
I also think its bad for the horse to get on from the floor all the time although all of myhorses will let me mount from the ground if ever I needed to.

I am 5' and Star is 16.2 and a bit! I can get on from the ground at a push, but I prefer to find something to stand on. Luckily Star is used to this arrangement and stands like a rock and waits for me to scramble up!

forget the height, more like the width!!!

My boy is just under 17 hh but is about 18.2hw (wide)
I use a large mounting block but its not just about up for me. More like out and around then over!
