how big will my 2year old make?

Ok so I am in a situation with my 2 year old. I brought him as a showjumping/eventing prospect but I really dont think he will make the height.
He is currently standing at 14.2hh at 2years. His sire was 14.2hh and dam 15.1hh. I really want something over 15.2hh. I measured his cannon bone and done all the old tricks and it works out he will make around 15hh. I want peoples opinions on how big he will make? i really dont want to waste my time if he is going to be too small. He is a welsh D X TB. he seemed to shoot up in his first year and now stopped and i have been told they do 90% of growing up to 2years so do i stand a chance? lol. Opinions on what he will make please??
 
I don't understand why you bought him if you wanted a 15.2hh? Considering his parents' heights. However, he is likely to keep growing until at least four or five years and so you may be lucky.

He was sold to make 15.2 but I am getting my doubts.
 
It all depends on the individual, my welsh d cross has grown about 2 inches from ages 2-3 and could possibly make another 1 inch to maturity at a guess? my warmblood grew 3-4 inches from 2 to 3 and isn't finished yet!!!
 
I have a Welsh (Dam) x TB (sire)

We bought her as a yearling and she was approx 14.1.

At 20 months she was 15.1

At 2 years 7 months she was 15.3

Rising 3 she was still 15.3

She is now 4 and stands at 15.3/16 hands.

I think theres an old fashioned way of measuring from the middle of the knee to the coronet and that gives the height they'll make (supposedly). My baby pony has just turned two and is about 14.2 but is quite bum high. His measurement said he'll make 15.2, and he was sold to me with the notion of making 15/15.2hh. His dad is 14.2 but mum is 16.2 so it sounds about right but we'll see!

I done that and it come up at 15hh lol. I think i need to face facts!!
 
Does it matter if he doesn't make 15.2hh? Little Tiger was 15hh and competed very successfully at eventing.

Can you leave it a bit longer and see what his builds like? A 15hh built like a welsh D might suit you better than a 15.2hh built like a fine TB :)
 
My friend bought a horse whose parents were all around the 15.2 mark and has ended up with a 16.3! He must be a throw back to previous generations.
 
At only 2 years he still has 4 years of, albeit slower growing to do. My boy was about 16hh at 2 and now aged 4.5 is stood at 17.1hh. So he may well make your 15.2 but I do wonder why you bought a horse with such small parentage and expect him to make an inch taller than the biggest of the two... throwbacks can happen of course ;)
 
I've got a 2 year old who is currently standing at 13.3hh. I was told he would make between 14.2hh and 15hh. I measured his rump today which measured 14hh and normally their withers measure 2 ins bigger than their rump (apparently) so it is logical that he will get to 14.2hh. Your baby should make about 3 ins more than he is now, so he should hit 15.1hh, HOWEVER. you say you don't like riding anything under 15.2, well there are at least 5 15.2 horses at my yard, one looks huuuuge! And another looks short and fat, they may measure the same but they all look different. Sometimes you get a 15.2hh that looks nearer 16.hh, and another that looks no more than 14hh. Depends on the horse.
 
Going off his parents alone I'd have guestimated offspring to be in their height range... Throwbacks aside...

Having said that, if he's more D than TB he may look and feel a heck of a lot bigger than the measuring stick indicates, when he's matured... I've a five yr old TB and 3yr old QH both hitting 15.2 at the withers... TB isn't ultra fine but QH looks like a hefty beast in comparison...

Give him a bit of time... :)
 
If height was that important I don't think it was a good idea to get something with such small parents, it was a needless risk IMHO.
My 2 year old is only standing 15.2 and she will make 16.3 17hh if that helps?
 
I agree, throwbacks aside if I had to have a horse over a certain height I personally would not have bought one from parents smaller than that height. I bred my lad out of my 15.2 I aimed at breeding something bigger than 15.2 so put her to a 16.1, now I did get a throwback, and at 3 he's already 16.2!!!
