How big will my Baby IDx get ??

I've got a 22 month old ID X New Forest (yes New Forest) and at the moment he is about 13.2hh. His dad (New Forest is about 13.1hh and he is bigger than his dad now, His mum is about 16.2 ID. out of one of the top ID Stallions. I'm hoping he makes at least 15hh.. He's still a baby in every way...Whats the verdict. and whats the best feed to give him without damaging his growth.. At the moment on Dengie HI-FI original and Mare and Younstock, plenty of Hay

First - congratulations to the Father - that was quite a mountain he climbed!

Was Mum pure-bred ID, or x-bred. The combination of heights of grandparents is usually a better guide to eventual height than parents' heights (I have a pure-bred young stallion out of a 15.2 RID mare, sire is 17 hh, son is 17.1 now and will grow another inch to be bigger than either!)

But I don't think your chap is going to be huge. (My big chap was 15.2 at 18 months.) At nearly 2 I wouldn't expect him to grow by more than another 4-6 inches - all other things being equal, so I think 15hh is achievable, but not much more. (Should make a stunning show cob!)

Being IDxpony, he should be a good doer and I would be VERY cautious about feeding. You need to look at the energy levels on the feed you are using, and feed no more than abouta third of the recommended amount. Use a good min/vit mix to ensure he gets enough, plenty of good hay, and that should do him nicely.

Hi thanks for reply. His grand Sire is Beaston Lord Henry 17hh (see ID website) Not sure who the Grand Dam was though. But His mum reg as full ID (not sports horse) and is about 16.2 and the NF stallion tends to throw larger foals than he is. going on the string theory i think he will make about 14.3...maybe just 15hh.... i hope. His Body overall is still very Baby'ish although in the last 2-3 months his legs have thickend out and his head is out of proportion with the rest of him really...aw bless hes osunds like a real freak but he's not....ha ha
