How big?

I wondered if I could get people's opinions on how big you think this pony will be at full height...

Two year old filly (two next week to be precise!)
She's currently 14 hands, full up (doesn't have high withers at all) and looks like her front end still has a bit of catching up to do with her bum!

The thing is, she's a pure bred New Forest pony (stud bred not forest bred) so is actually only meant to reach 14.2hh. Doing the 'rope test' it would seem she has about another 4 inches to grow!

In people's experience, if this type of pony is 14 hands at two years old, how big is she likely to get?

Here is a photo from about a month ago if that helps...

we bought a 13.3 pony that was 3, 2 years ago and she grew 3 inches in 12 months! but yours does look better developed than she did at 3 so hopefully only his front end will grow to catch up!

Ponies do not take as long as horses to mature so i would think she will not make any bigger than 14.2hh, but she should fill out and even up a lot in the next few years. She look's a lovely pony and it would be nice if she makes a full-up 14.2h. She looks very mature for her age and is in great shape!

Oh, thank you! She is pretty mature for her age in both her shape and temperament, she's so well behaved and isn't phased by anything. I have to keep reminding myself she's only just turning two!

I actually think she's grown since I last emasured her so she's probably about 14.1hh now, I'm going to measure her again tomorrow. She's really filling out now too. She's going to be quite a big pony!

Er hate to say this but my Connemara carried on growing until he was 7, he was just about 14hh when I bought him at 4 and is now full up 14.2hh. Really not sure about NF's though.
And as I've said before Caz she is gorgeous.

Hi Caz,

If she's full forest and stud bred I doubt she'll be over 14.2 when JMB measured. What's her prefix, she looks lovely..

Her breeding is Priory (sire Priory Firelight, dam another Priory pony but I can't remember her name at the moment!) but her prefix is Cocas because Christine Green (the Priory breeder) died so another lady is breeding them now.

She is lovely atcually, she's changed a lot since I got her as a yearling. Here's another couple of photos of her and there are more here having her first bath!... http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/bb154/Cazmck/Bonnie%203rd%20June%2007/

I wouldn't be surprised if she goes over height and it won't really bother me as I'm not fussed about showing any more so it won't matter.

I was always told that Foresters mature quite late. My last one was 5 when I got him and although he didn't grow taller he filled out a huge amount between the ages of about 7 and 9.

I think NF's and Connemara's are quite similar in that respect, but even if she goes overheight there will be loads you can do with her outside showing.

That's what I thought so it wouldn't surprise me if she makes 15 hands. I'm not bothered about showing any more, I did loads with Kir anyway. I'm getting a lot more into my jumping now and ODEs, dressage etc so if she can jump I'll be happy no matter what height she is! I haven't yet met a Forester that can't jump though so I'm sure I've got nothing to worry about. She's got lovely floating paces too.

Saw a fantastic pure NF Stallion coming about 3rd in the IRF at West Wilts - gorgeous pony - made the big warmbloods look hopeless by comparison!

i love foresters! i got 3 at the moment, just sold 2. they are so nice to deal with, but ive found that they dont seem to do much growing! im desperate for my TB / NF 3yo to grow, as she only 14.1 and i so desperatly want her to make 14.3-15hh. her bum has gone up tho. lets put a race on to c whose gets biggest! on a serious note, yours shouldnt get bigger than 14.2. you are so lucky in my books if your reaches horse height, im depserate for a " new fores horse" to event if anyone knows of one??? have fun with her! x

What a lovely filly. I'm sure you'll have lots of success and most importantly fun with her as she has a super outlook.

I've never had a NF before but have a 13.1hh purebred NF mare who is a great jumping pony - JA with 4.5K winnings - and she has just had an outstanding foal to Tiny Tim X. Like you I'm hoping she'll stay in a height range - 12.2hh for us - as she's a first foal so in about 4 years time I'll be able to help answer your question about NF growth rates!

I have to say that out NF mare is the nicest, easiest horse or pony I've ever had - she's sweet and kind yet a really clever and sharp pony to jump. We love her to bits and wouldn't hesitate to consider another NF.

Thank you!

I must admit, most people become addicted after owning a Forester! This is my second and I don't thik I'll ever be without one, they're the best all-round ponies!

Good luck with yours, she sounds fab. What's her breeding?
