Just been ringing around for quotes for a sand and rubber surface for my 20 x 40m outdoor school.

So far been quoted £11,000 which is for the surface, uplift of the old one and laying of the new one. Or £6000 for surface only and I'd have to lift the old one and lay the new one myself!!!!

WHAT!!!

Are these normal prices??? I was expecting to pay £5000 max for everything!

Sounds about right I'm afraid. I paid £2500 for a top up of rubber for my 60 x 25 arena (about half the amount I would have needed for a full renewal of the rubber). I paid £500 for 20 tons of silica sand to top up my sand turnout too. That gave me just an inch covering.

Yeah that does sound about right TBH I paid about £5500 for my new wood chip surface to be laid and that didn't include removal and disposal of the old surface.

God, I'll have to take out a second mortgage! How do you find your woodchip ossy? That's what I'm getting rid of as it's so slippy!

I went from just a really rubbish sand, which was what it was laid with when I moved there. I wanted rubber but a number of contractors said that wood chip was better, the way forward so I went with it. I don't find it slippy, never had anything slip or fall in it although I was at a yard where their woodchip was more like a sawdust and it was very slippy mine is a bit more chucky, can't remember now what exactly they called it. I do find it needs harrowing all the time and gets deep in parts and barron in others but its very well draining and held up well in the winter. I think if I was doing iut now I would stick to my guns and have the rubber though.

This is why I suggested 'crag' to you in your manege surface thread and said that you need to consider your budget. I had a quote of £4,500 for silica sand some 7 or 8 years ago and that needs a rubber topper too.

What exactly is "crag"? I've never heard of it before. Thanks.

ossy - mine has been well draining too but is just so loose. It's the chunky type too so not sure why it's worse than yours :(

Here is a definition of crag - it is as you will read very old from the seabed and quite popular in Essex in maneges for all disciplines. There are various crag quarries in the UK - it's a case of finding out if there is one near you.

THE RED CRAG
A gap in the geological record after the deposition of the Bagshot Sand indicates a great time interval and this was no doubt due to subsequent rocks being removed by erosion. This is followed by the two million year old Red Crag which occurs across much of north Essex, although it is only at Walton-on-the-Naze that it is well exposed. Laid down just before the present Ice Age, the red, iron-stained sand is teeming with fossil shells and forms spectacular layers on top of the London Clay.

The Red Crag also contains the teeth of sharks, the most famous of which is Carcharodon megalodon, the largest species of shark that ever lived, weighing in at some 65 tonnes. These teeth, which were derived from rocks of Miocene age and incorporated into the Red Crag, are extremely rare but examples have turned up on the beach over the years.
