How can a day go from great to hell in 5 minutes??

Cropi and I have got our first dressage test tomorrow and this afternoon I had my final lesson, she had a bath and I plaited her up.

We had the vet coming out as she has had conjunctivitis for around 3 weeks now. The vet came out originally and gave her some antibiotics that didn't clear it up so I rang and spoke to the vet and he sent us different ones that cleared one eye totally but the other eye kept getting weepy again. Anyway a different vet came out today and he gave her eye a real going over but she was not very happy being examined. The vet gave her a sedative so that he could have a good look inside as the thought that there was something going on with her 3rd eyelid. She fell asleep on me and there is something going on........ she has got Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the 3rd eyelid, its a cancerous tumour, not large at all but I looks horrid. Its not visible at all looking at her normally so not something that I could of spotted earlier. She is booked in for Monday to have an op to remove the 3rd eyelid.

I am so upset, I love her so much and the thought of her having any form of cancer totally fills me with fear. I have had a little Google of it and apparently it is more common in Appoloosas or horses with white skin.

I am still going to the show tomorrow, she is well in herself and my instructor even commented today on how great she is looking.

Gutted doesn't even come close to how I am feeling. I've been down to the yard and checked her twice tonight and she is fine. I'm just hoping and praying for a positive result on Monday with confirmation that it hasn't spread anywhere else

Just goes to show that you really should not take any risks with your horses health and if you are worried.......call the vet

That is such a shame, being as you were looking forward to the show and so happy and then you get some worrying news

and <<< hugs >>> for Monday

As a fellow Appy owner (or should that be fellow person owned by an Appy?) my thoughts are with you. Many vibes that the result is ok on Monday and please enjoy the show with her.

Aaaw ((((hugs))))
You must be so worried but I'm sure she will be fine, thank goodness your vet found the tumour.
Loads of luck for your dressage tomorrow - have a great time and try to stay positive.

Aw poor you - sounds like your persistence with the vets got it diagnosed pretty quick though, which has got to be a good thing. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

If we come home tomorrow with our first (and my first ever) rosette from our first show then I will be over the moon. But, as long as we have a good time I don't mind

Try and keep positive .Friend on our yard has been having treatment for a large cancerous growth over the top of her 5 year olds eye.He had several injections in the lump over a period of time and he seems to be a picture of health at the moment .The treatment he had seemed awful at the time which was around jan but hes back at pc and rc and local shows and behaving himself .He was a bit bad tempered for a few weeks the treatment made him feel a bit under the weather but he is in good health and the lump is now very soft and has shrunk .She thought he had a grass seed in his eye and like you called the vet it pays to be vigillant .Good luck with everything.

Poor you and Cropi, you must be worried sick right now. Go and have a great time at your dressage comp, im sure Cropi will love it too! Good luck and thinking of you both!

Oh hun! She will be fine. Go and enjoy yourself tomorrow and try to put it out of your mind. I'm sure she will be fine and the vet will take care of it all on Monday.

Big hugs and everything crossed for tomorrow!

Mine had one removed from her third eyelid about 18 months ago. I thought she'd scratched it on some brambles but it was a tiny carcinoma. Had it remove three days later. Results back - very very very low grade in terms of trouble - back to normal as soon as arriving home and ridden again within the week. All's been well with the eye since. Mine's an appy too.
Enjoy the show.

My friends cob had one of these removed about 3 years ago. He has been absolutely fine since. I am sure she will be ok.

Thank you all so much for your positive thoughts and positive outcomes
