To my OH who has become really keen to learn how to ride. He is ok at walk and starting to 'get it' but I am a rubbish teacher and can't quite explain it properly! Of course I know how to do it, but I cannot seem to explain it in an easy to understand way.

Thoughts?

Stand up, Sit down, stand up sit down, thats how I was taught

I did get better an prefer it to sitting trot now

explain trot is a two beat movement and count it out one two one two. get him to practice in walk standing up and down so find his balance repeating one two so up down.
then move on to trot once he is grand at up down in walk.

lol amykins, that and go up with one bounce, down on the next i spose would work? Not a RI though!! If they look down at a leg as it goes foward sit and as it goes back rise?? Haha i think i would be pretty awful too

I read a good tip when teaching my little girl that she had to pretend there was a prickly leaf sitting on the saddle and everytime she sat down she had to stand back up again, practised standing still then in walk and then trotting. Obviously try to get the right tempo. saying up down or sit stand helps as well. Similar concept works with sitting trot, we told her to imagine a golden fairy ticket sitting on the saddle and that she has to use her bottom to keep it there. Worked a treat.

Importantly they have to learn to NOT pull on reins so if you can get a leader to help to control pony then that is great!

lol Snowy thats what I ment, I can just remember the pain in my laegs when I used to do rising trot, now I get a weird bum pain from doing sitting trot. Its all about the rythum

using knee as pivot point (not gripping with knee) make sure all of thigh on against saddle, rotate your hip forward with the movement of the horse you are only supposed to get bum out of seat couple of inches not thrust hips forward. and land lightly in the seat as though you have something prickly there.

And see if he can feel the push from the horse when in trot, that will help to propel him upwards thus rising at the right moment. This helped my lad to start.

As others have said explain the 2 beat movement, then get him to trot a few strides but SIT not even try to rise. Stop ask him how it felt, can he feel how it goes 1 2? You might want to have a few goes in sitting trot for him to get the feel. Then ask him to stand up once only in trot and sit again, then stand up again, sit a couple of beats and stand up again, progess to rising up and down in time with the beat.

I have taught loads of people to do rising trot, with an adult they usually master it very quickly if they have felt it in sitting trot first. It can help once they have felt how bouncy trot is to watch someone doing rising trot so they can see how the rider moves in time with the horse.

It also helps to tell them to lean forwards and often place hands on the saddle to help push them selfs up. Also make sure he dosnt try to rise to high or its harder to get up again on the next beat.

You probably don't want to keep him in sttting trot too long.

He will only lean forwards and that will bruise his veg. and apparently that can be off putting!

I would try it in walk and then go into trot with minimal sitting. I've found with most people that if you shout the 1, 2 for them at the right speed they get the hang of it fairly quickly.

Remind him to sit back down gently into the saddle. You can get away with a kid being heavy on landing, but not an adult.
